Head nets hattrick to engineer Cardinals’ win

BENSON — Fairmont Area forward Tyler Head produced a game-best five points, including a hattrick, to power the Cardinals to a 5-2 victory over the host Morris/Benson Area Storm during the third-place game of the MBA Storm boys hockey holiday tournament on Friday night at the Benson Civic Center.

Logan Smith, however, staked the Storm to an early 1-0 lead by converting a double-assist from Kolley Goff and Hunter Gades into the game’s initial goal 3:15 into the opening period.

Head and teammate Tom Havnen, who produced one goal and two assists, combined forces on the ice to swing a 2-1 lead to the Cardinals after one completed frame.

Head, who finished with three goals and a pair of assists, cashed in Havnen’s precision pass for the equalizer at the 8:55 juncture of the first segment.

Havnen and Head then traded roles only eight seconds later as Havnen connected for the go-ahead goal off an assist from Head.

Head then extended Fairmont Area’s margin to 3-1 by finding the Storm’s net off a double-assist from Havnen and Bryan Karp at the 4:13 mark of the middle segment.

Head then turned his thoughts to passing by combining with Karp to set up Karson Legred’s power-play goal with only eight seconds remaining in the second period for a 4-1 advantage on the scoreboard.

Head then lit the lamp for the third time by taking a pass from Karp and beat MBA goaltender Tony Bruns at the 4:32 juncture of the third period.

Smith produced his second goal of the contest by cashing in Goff’s assist for MBA at the 12:35 mark of the final frame.

Goaltender Tyson Geerdes turned away 38 of the Storm’s 40 shots to net the victory for the Cardinals. Bruns prevented 35 of Fairmont Area’s 40 shots from crossing the line.

Fairmont Area (2-9) travels to Windom Area on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. game.
