New Ulm tops Fairmont in spring tennis

NEW ULM — New Ulm defeated Fairmont 6-1 on Monday in a Big South Conference spring tennis meet at New Ulm High School.

Fairmont’s No. 1 doubles team of Carter Quist and Dominick Lund-May picked up the lone win for the Cardinals, defeating Joey Kotten and Daniel Brownfield 7-6 (12-10), 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Mav Johnson defeated Anthony Stegge 6-0, 6-3, while Charlie Weidman defeated Tyler Siama 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Gideon Heins defeated Sebastian Castro 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Ian Schotzko defeated Wylee Frederiksen 6-0, 6-3.

Aaron Black and Ethan Neet defeated Oliver Thedens and Simoné Castro 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Isaac Dittmer and Eli Dorschner defeated Lilly Ortega and Leon Yang 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

MCW 2, HLO 1

WELCOME — Cam Meyer’s two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh lifted Martin County West to a 2-1 win over Heron Lake-Okabena in a nonconference baseball game.

Lucas Larson earned the win for MCW in seven innings, striking out nine along the way.

MCW plays at home against on Thursday in a Valley Conference game against Madelia.
