Fairmont boys, girls dominate home meet
FAIRMONT — The Fairmont boys and girls track and field teams dominated at a home meet on Tuesday, with the boys team scoring 239 points and the girls scoring 196.5 to both finish first.
Finishing second for the boys teams was Worthington (126), while St. James Area took third (71), New Ulm took fourth (70) and Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin took fifth (48).
New Ulm took second (113) for the girls, followed by SJA (107.5), Worthington (65) and MCW/B-O (61).
For the Fairmont boys, Nolan Schultze took first in the boys 100 (11.83), while Allon Chen took second (11.93). Schultze also took second in the boys 200 (24.38) and first in the boys 400 (52.99), while Connor Gronewald took second in the boys 400 (53.85). Isaac Sheard took second in the boys 800 (2:16.34), while Landon Gilbertson took second in the boys 110m hurdles (16.85) and second in the boys 300 hurdles (44.25). Oliver Tordsen took first in the boys shot put (46-06.5) and first in the boys discus (128-10), while Tytan Tumbleson took second in the boys high jump (5-08). Also for Fairmont, Gage Borntrager took first in the boys pole vault (12-06), while Ty Nawrocki took second (10-08). In the boys long jump, Isaiah Lockwood took first (19-01.5). The boys 4×100 relay team (Jeremiah Lebbi, Chen, Elijah Johnson, Blaze Geiger) took first (44.75), while the boys 4×200 relay team (Josiah Hoye, Taylor Austin, Caleb Chambers, Geiger) took first (1:35.47). Nelson Remington took first (32.08) in the boys 200 wheelchair and first in the 800 wheelchair (2:08.55).
For the Fairmont girls, Bella Larson took first in the girls 100 (13.66), while Harper Artz (1:03.42) and Macy Hanson (1:04.3) finished first and second, respectively, in the girls 400. Cadence Leiding (17.54) and Bella Schroeder (17.64) took first and second, respectively, for Fairmont in the girls 100m hurdles. Cadence Leiding (51.66) and Schroeder also took first and second, respectively, in the girls 300 hurdles, while Ellie Ortega (30-04) and Kennedy Becker (28-05.5) took first and second, respectively, in the girls shot put. Ellie Perkins took second in the girls pole vault (8-08), while Abbie Simpson took second in the girls triple jump (30-09.75). Fairmont’s 4×100 relay team (Nathaliah Johnson, Meredith Nemmers, Becker, Bella Larson; 54.16) 4×200 relay team (Johnson, Ella Wubbena, Mollie Leiding, Simpson; 1:59.05) and 4×400 relay team (Perkins, Madison Pluim, Macy Hanson, Artz; 4:23.17) all took first in their relay events.
The MCW/B-O boys were led by Bearent Kosbab, who took first in the boys 200 (23.77), while Ryan Pierson (10:02.52) and Grant Koehnen (11:02.32) took first and second, respectively, in the boys 3,200.
The MCW/B-O girls were led by Evelynn Christenson, who took second in the girls 1,600 (6:26.26), while Katie Hartke took second in the girls 3,200 (13:10.24). Also for the MCW/B-O girls, Mylee Larson took second in the girls discus (88-07), while Ava Thate took first in the girls high jump (4-10).
SPRING TENNIS
Fairmont 6, Pipestone 1
PIPESTONE — Fairmont didn’t return from its long trip to Pipestone empty-handed on Tuesday as the Cardinals cruised to a 6-1 win in a nonconference spring tennis meet.
Fairmont swept all singles matches, led by Anthony Stegge at No. 1 singles.
Stegge picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win over Lucas Zupp, while Tyler Slama defeated Cody Norberg 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Sebastian Castro shut out Brady Dunn 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Lilly Ortega battled to a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 win over Matthew Swenson at No. 4 singles.
Pipestone earned its one win at No. 1 doubles as the team of Chase Wilson and Makhi Winter defeated Oliver Thedens and Wylee Frederiksen. Fairmont’s No. 2 doubles team (Simone Castro and Zach Ashland) and No. 3 doubles team (Matthew Malo and Reed Wagner) each earned wins by forfeit.
Fairmont hosts St. James Area in a Big South Conference meeting on Thursday.
