Fairmont wins back-and-forth battle over Windom

WINDOM — Fairmont held on for a 6-5 win over Windom on Monday in a nonconference baseball game at Island Park.

The Cardinals opened the scoring in the top of the third on a pair of doubles, with Josh Soelter’s scoring a run. Windom tied it at 2-all in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after an error, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Fairmont retook the lead in the seventh after Joe Long walked and Nate Soelter singled to each score a run. Windom tied it again in the bottom of the seventh at 4-all before the Cardinals scored two more runs in the eighth after a fielder’s choice RBI by Merritt Pomerenke and an Isaac Stone RBI single.

Windom got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but the Cardinals held on.

Jensen Livesay got the win for Fairmont, giving up two hits and three walks for two unearned runs in two innings. He struck out five.

Soelter got the start for Fairmont, allowing four hits and three walks for two earned runs in six innings while striking out seven.

Long led Fairmont from the No. 9 spot in the lineup, going 2 for 3.

Fairmont (6-2) hosts St. Peter on Tuesday.

GIRLS GOLF

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont girls golf team took second at Interlaken Golf Club on Monday in the second Big South Conference East girls golf event with a score of 205.

Blue Earth Area took first with a 188, while Waseca was third (222), St. Peter took fourth (225), New Ulm took fifth (238) and Jackson County Central was incomplete.

BEA’s Katelyn Storbeck wa s the medalist with a 41.

Fairmont was led by Brynn Gustafson, who had a 47 to tie for fourth, while teammate Leslie Zarling shot a 48 for seventh. Also for Fairmont, Katherine Zelaya shot a 53 for eighth and Carly Gustafson shot a 57 to tie for 11th.

BOYS GOLF

WASECA — The Fairmont boys golf team shot a 184 to take fifth Monday at the second Big South Conference East boys golf event.

St. Peter took first at the meet with a 144, followed by Waseca (161), New Ulm (166), Jackson County Central (170), Blue Earth Area (177) and Fairmont (184).

St. Peter’s Kaiden Brovold was the medalist with a 34.

Mathew Cone led Fairmont with a 42, tying him for 12th, while Harmon Schrunk shot a 44 to tie for 19th, Macklain Anderson shot a 47 to tie for 24th and Hudson Mckean turned in a 51 to take 32nd.

SPRING TENNIS

FAIRMONT — New Prague defeated Fairmont 5-2 on Monday in a nonconference spring tennis meet.

At No. 1 singles, New Prague’s Carson Sayler defeated Anthony Stegge 6-1, 6-2, while New Prague’s Benett Gregor defeated Tyler Slama 5-7, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Fairmont’s Sebastian Castro defeated Logan Gutzmer 6-3, 7-5, while Fairmont’s Oliver Thedens defeated Austin Dvorak 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.

New Prague swept the doubles contests.

Connor Seeland and Ben VonBank defeated Wylee Frederiksen and Dominic Lund-May 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Caleb Stocker and Evan Otremba defeated Zachary Ashland and Reed Wagner 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Nathan Metko and Josiah Anderson defeated Simone Castro and Lillian Ortega 6-0, 6-1.

Fairmont is scheduled to host St. Peter in a Big South Conference
