‘Humor for Heroes’ makes return to Blazer

FAIRMONT — Last October, a comedy troupe appeared at the Blazer Bar and Grill in Fairmont as part “Humor for Heroes,” a rapidly-paced tour that encompassed 30 performances in 30 days. The funny men were raising funds in support of the Lone Survivor Foundation, which benefits wounded service members and their families.

On Friday night, the comedy show will make a return at the Blazer. The cause remains the same, but this time, the jokers have slowed their pace, calling their tour “Many Cities in Several Days.”

“If you happened to see the previous show, there will be different comedians this time so it won’t be the same material,” said Dylan Atkinson, owner of the Blazer.

“We had a lot of fun last fall. Those guys (at the Blazer) were so great to work with, so we’re coming back with a couple of new characters for another run at it,” said Chris Shaw.

Shaw, the organizer of the “Humor for Heroes” tour, appeared in the October show and will make an encore appearance on Friday.

“I’m a veteran so I’ve been touring and booking shows in VFWs and American Legions for many years,” he said. “Last fall, the whole show was for the Lone Survivor Foundation, and this one is too.”

Admission is $10 per person. Tickets are on sale now at the Blazer and also will be available the night of the show. Seating for the show begins at 7 p.m., with the performances starting at 8 p.m. There will be a limited number of reserved tables, each of which seats four people. Food will be available during the performance.

Proceeds from ticket sales go to the Lone Survivor Foundation to host retreats for service members with post-traumatic stress, mild traumatic brain injury, chronic pain and military sexual trauma. According to its website, the foundation’s mission is to restore, empower and renew hope for wounded service members and their families through health, wellness and therapeutic support.

Joining Shaw on stage will be Kyle Dekker and Dan Mogol.

“Kyle is a Marine veteran,” Shaw said. “He does a lot of work on the improv stage and with improv groups. He’s a performer at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, and he’s great in character. He’s been doing stand-up comedy for a few years as well. The fact that he was a veteran, I thought that it would be great to bring him along.”

While Shaw and Dekker saw military service, Mogol did not.

“Dan is not a veteran. He’s not even a vegetarian or a veterinarian,” quipped Shaw. “But he’s a Minnesota guy, and he’s somebody I’ve worked with quite a bit. He’s opened for me in several shows around the country. I find him very funny so I bring him along with me whenever I get the opportunity. He has great observational humor about everything from old people to fishing.”

Born and raised in New York City, Shaw claims he is in Minnesota under a witness relocation program.

“I mean, who would look for you here?” he said. “It’s too dang cold. They’re playing baseball in the snow.”

He has opened for “Weird Al” Yankovic and appeared on Comedy Central, VH-1 and A&E’s “Comedy on the Road.” A motivational speaker and humorist whose client list includes Disney, Mall of America and General Mills, Shaw has established a company called “Funny for the Money,” which helps non-profit organizations raise funds through comedy shows.

“I’m also, among other things, an auctioneer and a licensed minister,” Shaw said. Last October, he officiated at the wedding of Dan and Maria Bicknase of Fairmont who had seen him perform. “They called me and asked me to do their wedding for them. It was an outdoor wedding in Duluth along the shores of Lake Superior. It was beautiful.”
