Fairmont tracksters 1st, 2nd at indoor meet; Hanson sets mile mark

Macy Hanson

MANKATO — The Fairmont girls and boys track & field programs combined for four broken records, seven individual gold medals and two relay championships during Friday night’s season-opening indoor opener on the Minnesota State University campus in Mankato.

Junior long-distance standout Macy Hanson etched her name into the Cardinal history books again by generating a school-record time of 5:07.3 to win the 1,600-meter race.

Hanson, who eclipsed the previous record of 5:12.0 held by current Augustana runner Laura Thompson, and triple jumper Abbie Simpson captured first-place honors to help pace Fairmont’s runner-up team showing to St. Peter, 171-137.

Nelson Remington set new wheelchair division marks in the open 60, 400 and 200; Gavin Artner garnered the 1,600-meter run’s top prize; and Gage Borntrager tied for first place in the pole vault as the Cardinals rolled by St. Peter for the boys team crown, 170-128.

“Awesome performances across the board for us in the indoor opener,” said Fairmont head coach Jesse Walters, who awaits his teams’ individual and relay entries to Saturday’s 10 a.m. elite invitational back at Minnesota State University in Mankato.

Artner posted a winning time of 4:48 in the mile run for the Cardinals, and also contributed a second-place showing of 2:09 in the 800-meter run.

While Artner dominated the long-distance runs on the track, Borntrager demonstrated his top-level skills in the field events. Borntrager tied for first in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, 6 inches before spraying the sand in the triple jump pit at a second-place mark of 37-8.

Elijah Johnson and Nolan Schultze contributed points to Fairmont’s winning ways by placing second in the open 60 (7.16) and 400 (55.63), respectively, while teammate Oliver Tordsen heaved the shot to a runner-up distance of 42-11.

Landon Gilbertson contributed a bronze medal to the Cardinals’ cause by posting a third-place time of 9.33 in the 60-meter high hurdles, while teammate Braydon Lindsay was third in the 60 low hurdles (10.15).

Brier Lenort added scoring depth in the 1,600 with a third-place time of 5:19, while Jeremiah Lebbi sprinted to a bronze in the open 60 (7.2) and Tavian Harvey netted third in the 200 (24.98).

Blaze Geiger supplied a third-place time of 56.63 in the open 400 for Fairmont, Isaiah Lockwood long-jumped to third at 18-7.5, while Ethan Pockrus chipped in a bronze in the triple jump (37-3.5).

Remington eclipsed his own school records in the wheelchair division at the indoor opener by crossing the finish line first in the 60 meters (11.6), 400 (1:00.76) and 200 (30.64).

Blue Earth Area’s Jacob Grandgenett produced a double-victory performance by winning the 60-meter dash (7.14) and the open 200 (24.03).

In the girls competition, Simpson cleared the sand in the triple jump pit to a first-place mark of 30-4.75 to add scoring strength to Hanson’s record-setting mile mark.

Simpson and Hanson then combined handoffs with Madison Pluim and Harper Artz to capture top honors in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:26.02. Nathaliah Johnson, Jadyn Montgomery, Kennedy Becker and Bella Larson exchanged the baton to contribute a winning time of 1:59.14 in the 4×200 relay for Fairmont.

Simpson added a third-place leap of 14-2 in the long jump for the Cardinals, while Bella Larson tied for second place in the pole vault (8-6), placed third in the open 200 (29.65) and earned the bronze in the high jump by clearing 4-10.

Harper Artz claimed runner-up honors in the open 400 (1:05.97), Kennedy Becker nailed down second in the 200 meters (29.63) and Ellie Ortega earned second in the shot put by making a divot at 30-5.5 for Fairmont.

Becker and Nat Johnson also tied for third place in the open 60 meters with times of 8.58, while Cadence Leiding claimed third in the 60-meter high hurdles (9.65) for Fairmont.

Addison Armstrong won the 400-meter dash crown in 1:05.6), while Blue Earth Area teammate Chloe Groe added a gold medal in the shot put with a heave of 32-6.5.
