St. Peter defeats Fairmont in sectional team tennis quarterfinal
ST. PETER — The No. 2-seeded St. Peter Saints netted a 7-0 Section 2A Team Meet quarterfinal tennis win over the No. 7-seeded Fairmont Cardinals on Friday in St. Peter.
St. Peter advances to face No. 3-seeded Holy Family Catholic in a sectional team semifinal at 11 a.m. Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
Fairmont competes in the Section 2A Individual Meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gustavus Adolphus.
Marty Anderson generated one of St. Peter’s singles points by dealing a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Jack Hagen at the No. 1 spot in the bracket, while Tyson Schmitz collected another one of the host Saints’ team tallies by outlasting Sebastian Castro at second singles, 6-1, 6-4.
Colton Abels did not drop a game in posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Cardinals’ Wylee Frederiksen at third singles, while Ezekiel Ribar capped the Saints’ singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 winning decision over Simone Castro at the No. 4 position.
Olivia Ortega and Noah Vetter combined court skills at No. 2 doubles to net the most games for Fairmont. St. Peter’s Ben Taylor and Quinn Dixon, however, prevailed by producing set victories of 6-3 and 6-4 over Ortega and Vetter.
Magnus Soderlund and Luke Gilbertson then combined forces to fend off a third-doubles challenge by Fairmont’s Tyler Slama and Anthony Stegge. Soderlund and Gilbertson generated set wins of 6-2 and 6-3 to collect the team tally for St. Peter.
Anders Dixon and Will Elias completed the Saints’ doubles sweep by defeating Dominick Lund-May and Carter Quist at the No. 1 spot in the bracket, 6-2, 6-0.
