A plea for pickleball courts
Dear Editor,
As active pickleball players, we respectfully ask the Fairmont City Council to consider expanding indoor pickleball opportunities in Fairmont. For a city your size, having only one indoor regulation court is simply not enough to meet the growing demand. Additional indoor courts would allow residents to stay active and connected year-round, especially during Minnesota’s long winters. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, with participation continuing to grow across all age groups. Communities that invest in pickleball benefit from increased recreation, improved public health, stronger social connections and local economic activity. As a retired physical education teacher, I have introduced pickleball to students in grades 3-10 because it is easy to learn, affordable, and enjoyable for people of all ages and skill levels. Today, we often play with our elementary-age grandchildren, demonstrating how the sport brings generations together. We live near Welcome but play in Fairmont three to five times each week with players ranging in age from their 60s to their 80s. Every trip to Fairmont usually includes purchases of gas, groceries, gifts, or other items, contributing to the local economy. Unfortunately, with only one court, four or more people are often waiting while only four can play, limiting participation and creating frustration. Regular physical activity and social interaction are essential for healthy aging, and pickleball provides both. In a county with many older adults, additional indoor courts would offer an accessible, year-round way to improve physical and mental well-being while reducing social isolation. Facilities such as the Pickle Barn in Mankato demonstrate the demand for indoor pickleball. While Fairmont doesn’t need eight courts, adding just four indoor courts would provide space for open play, leagues, youth programs, and seniors, and could even attract tournaments and visitors. We hope you will invest in a facility that promotes health, strengthens community connections and supports local businesses 12 months a year. Please consider expanding indoor pickleball courts for the residents of Fairmont and area communities.
Sincerely, Kermit and Robin Carlson, Welcome, MN
