Martin Co. Area vaults to victory over St. James Area

ST. JAMES — A near-perfect sweep.

The Martin County Area Magic gymnasts captured 19 of the 20 top-five individual finishes to vault to a 125.9-100.775 dual-meet triumph over the St. James Area Saints on Tuesday night in St. James.

Eighth-grader Mollie Leiding narrowly outdueled seventh-grade teammate Lillie Schultz to capture the all-around competition in pacing the Magic’s Big South Conference victory.

Leiding captured top overall individual honors by generating 31.925 points, while Schultz garnered runner-up accolades with a four-event total of 31.625.

Leiding earned first-place honors on both the balance beam (8.85) and floor exercise (8.175), Schultz struck gold on the vault (8.9), while MCA teammate Jadyn Montgomery produced the best score on the uneven parallel bars (7.6).

Montgomery paced the Magic’s top-five sweep on the uneven bars as teammate Ava Thate claimed second place with a 7.125, while Abi Chavez pocketed third place at 6.825. Schultz and Mollie Leiding rounded out MCA’s event sweep by claiming fourth (6.725) and fifth (6.5), respectively.

Schultz and Chavez packed a 1-2 scoring punch to trigger the Magic’s top-five showings off of the vault table. Schultz won the event with an 8.9, while Chavez netted second place at 8.45.

Mollie Leiding pocketed third on the vault with an 8.4-scored effort, Thate finished fourth at 8.375, while Montgomery capped the sweep with an 8.35.

Mollie Leiding edged Schultz for top honors on the floor exercise, 8.175-8.15, respectively, while Avery Steuber and Nora Fitzgerald — a pair of seventh-graders — shared third place with 7.65s. Chavez completed the sweep with a 7.35.

Mollie Leiding coasted to a winning score of 8.85 on the balance beam to earn gold, while Schultz pocketed runner-up honors with a 7.85.

Adrianna Leiding claimed third place on the beam with a 7.675-scored performance, Steuber placed fourth with a 7.4, while Isabel Zamora earned St. James Area’s only top-five place with a 6.95.

Martin County Area plays host to Big South opponent St. Peter at 6 p.m. tonight at Live Fit Sport & Wellness Center in Fairmont, weather permitting.

The Magic travel to Waseca on Tuesday night for a BSC dual.
