FAIRMONT — “Balanced and efficient scoring,” Fairmont Area head girls soccer coach Matt Nielsen said in reference to his Cardinals’ 10-2 rout over the Worthington Trojans on Thursday night at Jeffery Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.

Anna Utermarck, Elayna Anderson, Kennedy Becker and Maia Goerndt each lit up the scoreboard with two goals apiece for Fairmont Area, Emma Scheppmann distributed a game-best four assists, while Becker added two helpers to her impressive overall statistics.

The Cardinals generated a baker’s-dozen worth of shots-on-goal each half, cashing in 4 of 13 during the initial 40 minutes of Big South Conference play before converting 6 of 13 more in the second segment.

Fairmont Area ended its regular season with a 7-9 overall record and awaits the pairings for its first-round Section 2A match next Thursday. An opponent, time and venue will be determined on Sunday.

“The regular season’s over, and now we need to get back to work and focus on the sectional playoffs,” said Nielsen.

Utermarck, Anderson and Becker reeled off consecutive goals, respectively, during a 7-minute span in the first half to stake Fairmont Area to an early 3-0 advantage during its regular-season finale.

Utermarck curled home a goal from the right wing after taking a pinpoint pass from Scheppmann to stake the Cardinals to a 1-0 lead at the 31:24 juncture.

Anderson then connected on a right-wing riser off a pass from Anna Busche to find twine at the 30:18 mark before Becker rebounded Scheppmann’s deflection for a putback tap-in at the 24:34 mark.

Cristy Banegas spoiled Fairmont Area netminder Madi Stromberg’s shutout bid by punching home a net-bender off teammate Leidy Chavez Martin’s blocked initial shot with 15:19 left before halftime.

Becker and Scheppmann worked their offensive magic with only 41 seconds left before intermission. Scheppmann skidded a pass through defenders to Becker, who squeezed home a goal inside the right post.

Selma Bleess and Kate Busche joined the Cardinals’ scoring column in back-to-back style to open the second half, with Becker dealing the assist on Busche’s net-finding kick.

Maia Goerndt then sandwiched Cardinal goals around Worthington forward Sara Esquivel’s lofted goal before Anderson and Utermarck capped the offensive explosion with one goal apiece during the final 10:35.

Stromberg finished with six saves for the Cardinals, while Trojans’ netkeeper Maylin Fabian Perez tallied a game-best 16 stops.
