Mustangs eliminate Warriors in district baseball opener
FONDA, Iowa — The Newell-Fonda Mustangs coasted to a 10-0, five-inning triumph over the North Union Warriors during first-round Iowa Class 1A, District 2 baseball playoff action Monday in Fonda, Iowa.
North Union ended its season with a record of 3-18.
Newell-Fonda (19-6) advances to face West Bend-Mallard (7-15), which defeated West Hancock 4-3 in opening-round playoff action Monday.
Newell-Fonda and West Bend-Mallard will face off at 7 p.m. tonight in Fonda, Iowa.
Hunter Christiansen, Trey Jungers and Ryan Greenfield each collected two hits and two RBIs for the Mustangs, with Christiansen adding a double and Greenfield smacking a triple in the run-rule decision.
Carter Sievers netted a two-run single, while Beau Wilken had two hits for Newell-Fonda.
Trey Jungers threw four shutout innings for the Mustangs, allowing one hit and two walks, while striking out six. Mason Dicks pitched the final inning for Newell-Fonda, striking out two and walking one.
