FAIRMONT — Some prep tennis players affectionately refer to 6-0 set victories as “doughnuts.”

Fairmont’s netters almost baked up a perfect half-dozen doughnuts in the doubles bracket, while cooking up two more in singles action for the perfect recipe behind a 7-0 Big South Conference East Division shutout over the New Ulm Eagles on Thursday.

Libby Totzke and Hope Klanderud combined court skills at the No. 3 doubles position to post back-to-back 6-0 set triumphs for two of Fairmont’s five love decisions on the dual meet at the Cardinal Courts.

Libby Totzke and Klanderud needed only the minimum 12 games to defeat New Ulm’s Kate Frauenholtz and Calyn Glaser to collect Fairmont’s initial team point.

Head coach Laura Olsen then shuffled the Cards at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in the doubles divisions and produced 24 wins in 25 games for the bracket sweep.

“We tried a couple of different looks to see how the girls responded and all three doubles teams played well,” said Olsen.

Maggy Totzke, who played third singles in Monday’s opening meet against River Valley, teamed with Lauren Davis at first doubles to coast to back-to-back 6-0 set wins over Emily Guggisberg and Maddie O’Connor. The Maggy Totzke–Davis winning decision officially proved the fourth and decisive team tally on the meet.

“Maggy and Lauren really bring out the best in each other when they play doubles together,” said Olsen, “while Emily (Hagen) can play with anybody and vice versa.

“Doubles is all about finding compatible personalities that create a good chemistry.”

Hagen, who played first doubles on Monday, made the smooth transition to combining forces with Shannon Green at the No. 2 spot in the bracket.

Hagen and Shannon Green netted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Makenna Simpson and Marissa Todesco to produce Fairmont’s fifth team point.

Lauren Green, who played with sibling Shannon Green at second doubles in the season-opener three days earlier, also generated one of the Cardinals’ doughnuts at No. 3 singles. Lauren Green defeated Malia Emerson, 6-1, 6-0, to account for the Cardinals’ third team point.

Briana Joseph coasted to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Abby Hietala during second singles action for the seventh doughnut on the day. Joseph’s win proved the second team tally of the dual meet.

Claire Nemmers and Abi Peyman then generated straight-set wins at the Nos. 1 and 4 spots, respectively, in the singles division to close out Fairmont’s second consecutive shutout win.

Nemmers downed New Ulm junior Makiah Otto, who was battling back from offseason knee surgery, in back-to-back 6-2 set decisions, while Peyman served back-to-back 6-3 set losses to Lydia King to cap the team triumph.

Ironically, Fairmont (2-0) travels to New Ulm (0-2) on Monday for the last of the two programs’ home-and-away series this season. The Cardinals and Eagles will get underway at 4:30 p.m.
