Martins to cross state line, play Pirates in baseball opener tonight

BANCROFT, Iowa — If you’re looking for a live sporting event to watch, you’re finally in luck.

The Fairmont Martins will throw out the first pitch of the amateur baseball season at 7:30 p.m. tonight when they square off against the Blue Earth Pirates on Vince Meyer Field at Bancroft Memorial Park in Bancroft, Iowa.

“We just want to play baseball. Period,” said Martins player/coach Levi Becker. “Our team is just happy to give people in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa something to watch.”

Since the Martins’ home diamond — Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont — is currently off limits because of Minnesota’s statewide moratorium due to the coronavirus pandemic, Levi Becker made the 37-mile trip across the state line to ask permission to use the legendary ball park shared by the North Union Warriors high school baseball team and the Bancroft Those Guys — formerly the Bandits — amateur lineup.

“It’s a really nice ball park and we’d like to thank the city officials in Bancroft for allowing us to play six games there before the North Union summer baseball schedule gets under way on the 16th (of June),” said Levi Becker.

The Martins will play a pair of seven-inning contests on Saturday at Bancroft Memorial Park, starting with the first of three total games scheduled.

Fairmont opens the diamond action against New Ulm at noon, followed by host Bancroft squaring off against New Ulm at approximately 2:30 p.m. The Martins cap the amateur baseball triangular against host Those Guys at approximately 5 p.m.

Fairmont returns to Bancroft for a single game against St. Clair at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, before squaring off against Lonsdale and host Bancroft in a split doubleheader on Saturday, June 20. The starting times and pairings for the twinbill will be determined at a later date.

“Everything is starting to fall into place for us,” said Levi Becker. “Blake Crawmer, one of our players, played high school ball in Bancroft, and he’s getting the field ready for us to play on it (tonight).

“Our lineup will look a little different as we’ve got a number of former and current college guys back in the area who are anxious to play,” said Levi Becker.

Current Abilene Christian University pitcher Spencer Chirpich, former Kentucky and San Diego Padres minor league infielder Luke Becker and former Buena Vista University infielder/pitcher Tyler Tennyson are three former standouts expected to don a Martins jersey for tonight’s season-opener in Bancroft.
