Fairmont cagers to host 2AA opener; BEA hits the road

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals girls basketball team netted the No. 4 seed and home-court advantage in its postseason opener.

Fairmont tips off Section 2AA, South Sub-Section quarterfinal action against No. 5-seeded Maple River at 7 p.m. Monday night at Cardinal Gym.

The winner between Fairmont and Maple River advances to play either No. 1-seeded Waseca or No. 8-seeded Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in a 6 p.m. sub-section semifinal Friday, Feb. 28, at Mankato East High School.

No. 7-seeded Blue Earth Area hits the road to No. 2-seeded Medford for a 7 p.m. sub-section quarterfinal Monday night, while No. 6-seeded New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva travels to No. 3-seeded Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial for a 7 p.m. playoff game Monday night.

The winners square off in a sub-section semifinal at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at East High School.

FHS, MCW prep Red Bulls’ fans for state tournament

FAIRMONT — A fan bus sign-up for the Martin County Red Bulls wrestlers’ Class AA state team tournament day will be available at both Fairmont and Martin County West high school offices from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Fans need to pay in person for the bus. Price of the fan bus is $10 per person. No phone calls or e-mails will be accepted.

Fans must be in grades 9-12 to ride the bus, while students in kindergarten through grade 8 must be accompanied by a parent.

Fairmont and MCW will NOT have presale tickets available. Fans will have to purchase tickets for every session that they attend or can buy a daily pass. The cost of tickets are: adults $16 per session or a daily pass for $30, while students will pay $10 per session or get a daily pass for $18.

The Red Bulls wrestle Orono in an 11 a.m. state team quarterfinal Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Red Bulls will then wrestle a minimum of one dual meet, with a chance of a second dual later next Thursday.

There will NOT be a fan bus for the Class AA state individual wrestling tournament on Friday, Feb. 28, or Saturday, Feb. 29.

A pepfest will take place at 8:25 a.m. Wednesday at MCW High School in Sherburn. A pepfest will follow at Fairmont High School at 9:40 a.m. that same day.

The MCW fan bus departs at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in front of the high school in Sherburn. The Fairmont fan bus departs at 7:30 a.m. next Thursday, and will load by the field house located next to Mahoney football field.

Blue Earth Area gears up for state wrestling tourney

BLUE EARTH — Blue Earth Area High School will be offering a fan bus for the Buc wrestlers’ state team meet and have advance tickets for sale.

Advance tickets for Blue Earth Area’s 9 a.m. Class A state team quarterfinal meet against Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Southland on Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul will be sold from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Blue Earth Area High School office.

The prices for the tickets are $16 for adults and $10 for students per session. There are two sessions for next Thursday, with session 1 running from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., while session 2 runs from 5-9 p.m. that day. Blue Earth Area is guaranteed of wrestling twice, and if they win one of those meets in session 1, they will wrestle in session 2.

The advance sale tickets cannot be used as part of the season book or daily pass — they are single-session tickets only. Please don’t buy a ticket in advance from the school if you want to get a daily pass or season book later on.

Fan buses will be available for the Thursday, Feb. 27 team competition. Buses will depart from the front of the BEA high school parking lot at 6 a.m. next Thursday.

Buses will depart from Xcel Energy Center 30 minutes after the completion of the wrestlers’ last dual meet next Thursday.

Sign-up for the fan buses is until 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the activities office at BEA High School. Fans must sign up in advance to ride.

The fan bus will cost $10 per person. The bus is available to all fans of any age. However, students eighth grade and younger will need to be accompanied by an adult.

There will NOT be a fan bus for the Class A state individual wrestling tournament on Friday, Feb. 28, or Saturday, Feb. 29.

Fairmont Area boys hockey travels to Hutch tonight

FAIRMONT –The Fairmont Area Cardinals boys hockey team will square off against the Hutchinson Tigers during Section 3A quarterfinal action at 7 p.m. tonight at Burich Arena in Hutchinson.

North Union girls basketball faces Osage in regional

ARMSTRONG — The North Union Warriors girls basketball lineup will battle Iowa Class 2A, No. 5-ranked Osage in a Region 2 semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday night in Osage, Iowa.
