Lofstrom, Laverty power North Union cagers to Region 2 win over Pocahontas

ARMSTRONG — North Union’s towering tandem of Chloe Lofstrom and May Laverty helped the Warriors pull away from the Pocahontas Indians during Tuesday night’s postseason basketball clash in Armstrong.

Lofstrom produced an impressive game-best double-double performance of 26 points and 20 rebounds, while Laverty delivered 14 points and nine boards to engineer North Union’s 61-51 victory over Pocahontas during an Iowa Class 2A, Region 2 quarterfinal clash.

North Union (15-7) advances to face No. 5-ranked Osage (20-2) in a 7 p.m. regional semifinal on Friday night in Osage, Iowa. Osage eliminated Lake Mills, 62-28, during Tuesday’s quarterfinal.

Sarah Powers and Kaylee Shivers ignited the Indians’ fourth-quarter comeback, helping Pocahontas actually trade one-point leads twice with North Union during the final 4 minutes of regulation.

Laverty generated a pivotal six-point surge single-handedly to extend a narrow 51-50 lead to 57-50. Laverty drained a corner 3-pointer with 2:52 remaining in regulation before hitting a runner and the ‘and-1′ for the Warriors’ seven-point margin with 1:43 left in the fourth quarter.

Brooklyn Prochniak, who distributed three assists, sank two clutch free throws with 1:20 remaining to help close out the Warriors’ winning ways.

Hope Steinberger collected six points, eight rebounds and five steals for North Union, which connected on 22 of 32 free throws on the night.

Powers netted 16 points to top Pocahontas (14-8), while Shivers supplied 15 points.

Sioux Central 69, North Union 51 — Three players reached double digits to help the Rebels eliminate the Warriors from the Iowa Class 2A, District 3 boys basketball playoffs Tuesday night in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Jacob Hargens led the Rebels with 19 points, while Connor Christian had 14 points and Carter Boettcher scored 13.

Robert Ortman was the lone Warrior to score in double digits with 15 points, while also leading the team with six rebounds.

Gage Madden added seven points, three rebounds and three assists for the Warriors, Braden Pierce and Noah Morphew each scored six points, while Nick Schiltz and Brendan Anderson delivered five points each.

The Rebels (13-9) move on to face Emmetsburg in Hull, Iowa, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Warriors ended their season with a record of 3-19.

Blue Earth Area 72, St. James Area 58 — Cameron Anderson scored 19 points to help lead the Bucs past the Saints during Big South Conference basketball action Tuesday night in St. James.

Austin Thielfoldt produced 16 points to the Bucs’ winning ways, while Braden Gudahl contributed 15.

Caelan Sanders tallied seven points for the Bucs, while Zach Herrmann and Grant Strukel each scored six.

Hayden Jones led the Saints with 18 points, while Logan Carlson was close behind with 17 and Derrick Halvorson scored 10.

Blue Earth Area (10-9) travels to New Richland to face New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Thursday night.

Nicollet 59, Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain 56 — A 3-pointer off the back rim and a missed 2-pointer kept the Raiders ahead of the Jaguars in the final seconds of a Valley Conference Showcase basketball clash Tuesday night in Northrop.

Adam Heckman led the Jaguars with 22 points to complement four rebounds, while Matt Heckman netted 15 points, while shooting 3 of 7 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Cael Jaskulke grabbed eight boards to lead the Jaguars, while Owen Wolter chipped in seven points and Cayden Fischer produced six points.

The Jaguars (18-7) play host to St. James Area on Thursday night in Northrop. The Jaguars then learn their seeding for the Section 2A, South Sub-Section tournament on Saturday.

Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 65, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 48 — Brooke Naas scored 15 points, while Margo Stoesz had 12 to lead the Wolverines past the Jaguars, 65-48, during nonconference basketball action Tuesday night in Comfrey.

The Jaguars ended the regular season with a record of 11-15. GHEC/Truman/ Martin Luther travels to St. Clair on Monday night to face the host Cyclones in a Section 2A, South Sub-Section quarterfinal game.

Michaelah Petrowiak led the Jaguars with 13 points to complement seven rebounds, while teammate Eden Studer brought down a team-leading nine boards.

Jayme Balcom scored 12 points to help the Jaguars, while Lizzie Oothoudt and Emily Stauter each netted eight points, with Stauter adding five rebounds.

Lydia Steinhaus also grabbed five boards for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars made 14 of 49 shots from 2-point range, 5 of 12 from beyond the 3-point arc and 5 of 13 from the charity stripe.
