Geistfeld engineers Mavericks’ triumph over Luverne

LUVERNE — The Martin County West Mavericks boys basketball team fended off the Luverne Cardinals’ second-half comeback for a 70-66 victory during hardwood action Tuesday night in Luverne.

Martin County West improved to 13-1 overall with the nonconference decision.

The Mavericks stampeded to a 31-22 halftime lead before the host Cardinals out-scored the visitors, 44-39, during the final 18 minutes.

Wyatt Geistfeld neared triple-double territory by producing game-best numbers of 25 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to pace MCW’s winning ways.

Angel Reyes contributed 12 points and eight rebounds to the Mavericks’ effort, Tanner Sinn chipped in 12 points, while Zach Anderson added a double-double performance of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Derek Dunlop netted seven points for the Mavericks, which made 23 of 40 shots from 2-point distance, only 2 of 16 behind the 3-point arc and 18 of 30 at the free throw line.

Bailey Cowell poured in a team-best 22 points for Luverne, Isaiah Bartels netted 19 points, while Gannon Ahrendt chipped in 11 points.

Martin County West (13-1) travels to Janesville on Thursday night to face Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, while Luverne (5-9) hits the road to Garretson, S.D., for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 76, Blue Earth Area 53 — Grant McBroom connected on five 3-pointers to fuel a game-best 32-point performance in propelling the hometown Bucs to a 23-point non-league triumph Tuesday night in Waterville.

Domanik Paulson netted 14 points, while teammate Cole Kokoschke chipped in 11 points for WEM.

Zach Herrmann delivered 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to top BEA, while Cameron Anderson produced 12 points and six boards.

Braden Gudahl scored nine points, Grant Strukel tallied six points, while Sam Keister chipped in five points for BEA.

Blue Earth Area (6-5) travels to St. Peter on Friday night, while Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (14-1) plays host to Maple River on Thursday night in Waterville.

Forest City 73, North Union 45 — Noah Miller sank four 3-pointers to highlight his game-high 27-point performance to power the Indians to a 28-point Top of Iowa Conference win over the Warriors on Tuesday night in Armstrong.

Robert Ortman produced a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds to complement three assists and three steals to top North Union.

Noah Morphew and Avery Krantz scored eight points apiece for the Warriors, while Brendan Anderson chipped in six points and three steals.

The Warriors made 17 of 53 field goals overall and 6 of 10 free throws on the game.

North Union (1-12) travels to Britt, Iowa, on Friday night to play West Hancock.

Girls Basketball

North Union 43, Forest City 36 — Chloe Lofstrom produced yet another game-best double-double performance to engineer the Warriors’ key seven-point Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Indians on Tuesday night in Armstrong.

Lofstrom made 7 of 10 field goals to pace her 18-point effort to complement pulling down 12 rebounds.

May Laverty collected eight points and garnered 11 rebounds for North Union, Brooklyn Prochniak pocketed six rebounds, while Cassie Beadle and Hope Steinberger distributed four and three assists, respectively.

The Warriors made 15 of 48 field goals overall and 11 of 18 at the free throw line on the game.

North Union (9-4) hits the road to Britt, Iowa, on Friday night to play West Hancock.

Le Sueur-Henderson 52, Blue Earth Area 49 — The Giants held off the Bucs by three during nonconference action Tuesday night in Le Sueur.

No individual or team statistics were reported by either program.

Blue Earth Area (1-13) travels to Wells on Thursday night to face United South Central.
