Rohman tabbed Rumble’s top wrestler; Red Bulls place 8th

FARGO, N.D. — Jaxson Rohman achieved a prep wrestling rarity Saturday — even by the 2018 Class AA individual state champion and four-time state medalist’s lofty standards.

Rohman, who recently surpassed former Martin County Red Bull standout Collin Steuber as the program’s all-time career wins leader with 186, was selected as the Rumble on the Red’s most outstanding wrestling for the two-day elite competition at the FargoDome.

The Martin County junior standout captured the 126-pound gold medal during Day 2 of the Rumble in Fargo, N.D., to pace the Class AA No. 3-ranked Red Bulls’ eighth-place showing out of the 58-team field.

With only seven grapplers competing, the Red Bulls generated 105 points to finish just three points behind seventh-place Wayzata and 3.5 points behind sixth-place Bismarck, N.D. New Prague captured the Rumble on the Red team crown by outdistancing runner-up Northfield, 146-124.

Ironically, the Red Bulls, who did not compete in the annual event in 2018, captured eighth place at the 2017 Rumble on the Red holiday tournament.

Rohman, who’s the No. 2-ranked 126-pounder in the Minnesota Class AA state poll, earned a hard-fought 8-6 decision over Bismarck St. Mary’s junior Reece Barnhardt in the Rumble’s 126-pound championship clash Saturday. Barnhardt is the No. 1-ranked 126-pounder in the North Dakota Class A high school poll.

Rohman, however, was not alone in earning a spot on the medal stand Saturday as Red Bull teammates Miles Fitzgerald placed second at 160 pounds, Nathan Simmonds pocketed a bronze medal at 170, Connor Simmonds finished fourth at 138, while Kain Sanders delivered an eighth-place showing at 113.

Fitzgerald, who’s No. 3 at 160 in the state rankings, nearly reached the top of the podium, but lost a down-to-the-wire 4-3 decision to Scott West senior Jace Demmers in the Rumble’s 160-pound finale. Demmers holds the No. 1 spot at 160 in the Minnesota Class AA state poll.

Nathan Simmonds, who holds the No. 4 spot at 170 in Class AA, battled his way through the wrestlebacks to capture third-place accolades Saturday.

Nathan Simmonds posted an 8-6 decision over Fargo Davies senior Connor Chloupek before defeating Andover junior Mitchell Nowlan by a 10-4 victory. Chloupek is ranked No. 3 at 170 in the North Dakota Class A state poll, while Nowlan is No. 8 at the same weight in the Minnesota Class AAA state rankings.

Nathan Simmonds continued his impressive run by generating an 11-5 win over unranked Farmington junior Chase Vought in the bronze-medal match.

Connor Simmonds nearly matched his brother’s third-place showing during 138-pound action Saturday in Fargo, N.D.

Connor Simmonds, who’s ranked No. 3 at 138 in Minnesota’s Class AA, produced a 4-0 shutout over Minneota’s Jonah Gruenes to qualify for the bronze-medal match. No. 1-ranked 138-pounder Drew Woodley of Northfield, however, posted a 12-4 major decision over Simmonds to place third.

Sanders, who’s unranked thus far this season, got pinned by New Prague’s Colton Bornholdt in 113-pound wrestleback action before losing a hard-fought 10-5 decision to Bismarck Century senior Neal Bohrer in the seventh-place match. Bohrer holds the No. 3 spot at 113 in the North Dakota Class A state rankings.

The Martin County Red Bulls (3-0 dual meets) compete in the Tri-City United Invitational in Montgomery at 8 a.m. Saturday.
