New Ulm hockey sweeps pair with Fairmont Area

NEW ULM — Three Eagles players each scored twice and Nolan Drill had a playmaker in New Ulm’s 10-1 win over Fairmont Area in Big South Conference boys hockey action Thursday night in New Ulm.

Teddy Giefer got the scoring started for the Eagles in the first period when he used Drills’ first assist at the 9:27 mark.

Glavine Schugel followed with a goal off a double assist from Jace Addy and Josh Gulden with three minutes left before Braxten Hoffmann scored 14 seconds later off an AJ Arneson helper.

Cade Bushard scored back-to-back goals to open the second period. Bushard’s first came at the 13:16 juncture off an assist from Jacob Berg. Bushard scored at the 11:22 mark off a double assist from Hunter Hulke and Teagan Kamm.

Noah Wilmes scored his first of two second-period goals at the 10:08 mark off a double assist from Drill and Keagan Schiro. Giefer scored his second with 8:28 left off a double helper from Hoffmann and Schugel.

Wilmes scored his second goal with 1:29 left in the second off a double assist from Drill and Schiro.

Berg scored with 8:47 left in the final period off an assist from Hulke and Kyden Wenisch scored with 7:37 left off an assist from Gulden to push New Ulm’s lead to 10-0.

Eli Anderson denied Eagles’ goalie Kyle Esser a shutout, scoring the Cardinals’ only goal off a Carter Olson assist with 2:35 to go.

New Ulm outshot Fairmont Area 54-11 in the matchup.

Carsen Musser made 44 saves for the Cardinals, while Esser made 10 to net the win for the Eagles.

Fairmont Area (2-4, 1-2) travels to Worthington on Tuesday, while New Ulm (4-2, 4-0) goes to Waseca.

Girls Hockey

New Ulm 7, Fairmont Area 0 — Molly Scheid scored four goals and the Eagles soared by the Cardinals in Big South Conference girls hockey play Thursday in New Ulm.

Scheid scored her first — the lone goal of the first period — with 7:33 left in the opening segment unassisted.

Maddie O’Connor scored to open the second period off a double assist from Julia Helget and Brooke Arneson with 16:26 left before Scheid scored at the 15:41 mark off a double assist from Hayda Helget and Alexa Steffl.

Julia Helget scored off a double assist from McKenna Strong and O’Connor with 13:05 remaining in the second segment.

Scheid later scored her third goal with 10:42 left off an assist from Jayda Helget.

Julia Helget scored with 14:16 left in the third period on a power play off an assist from Steffl.

Scheid scored her fourth and final goal of the contest with 1:58 left off a double assist from Jayda Helget and Morgan Klein.

New Ulm outshot Fairmont Area 71-3 in the matchup.

Hadley Artz established a Fairmont Area single-game saves record by stopping 64 of New Ulm’s shots on goal.

Ava Brennan netted the win for New Ulm by recording only three saves between the pipes.

Fairmont Area (2-6-1, 2-2) travels to Worthington for a 5:30 p.m. matchup Tuesday night.

New Ulm (7-4, 5-0) plays host to Waseca at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
