Mavericks defuse Chargers in area hoops; Jaguars ground Blackhawks

TRIMONT — Angel Reyes poured in a game-best 28 points to power the Martin County West Mavericks to a 72-46 triumph over the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers on Saturday during nonconference basketball action in Trimont.

Reyes scorched the nylon nets on 11-for-14 field-goal shooting — including three 3-pointers — to complement grabbing six rebounds and pocketing three steals.

Wyatt Geistfeld collected 13 points, distributed a game-best six assists and pulled down five rebounds for the Mavericks, while Tanner Sinn scored eight points.

Zach Anderson contributed seven points, a game-high seven rebounds, three steals and four assists to MCW’s winning performance.

The Mavericks connected on 24 of 45 shots from 2-point range, 6 of 15 behind the 3-point arc and 6 of 9 at the free throw line.

Ethan Mischke and Nathan Kuehl scored 13 points apiece to top the Chargers’ effort, while teammate Austin Parker chipped in eight points.

The Chargers sank 11 of 34 shots from 2-point distance, 7 of 33 from behind the bonus arc and 3 of 7 free throws.

Martin County West (2-0) plays host to Blue Earth Area on Tuesday night in Trimont in a non-league game.

Truman/Martin Luther/GHEC 75, Madelia 41 — The Heckman connection engineered the Jaguars’ 34-point rout over the Blackhawks during the championship game of the Tip-off Tournament on Saturday in Truman.

Adam Heckman, who made 8 of 12 field goals on the day, netted a game-best double-double performance of 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Matt Heckman scored 15 points, grabbed six boards and distributed four assists.

Cayden Fischer netted 11 points and doled out three assists for the Jaguars, while Owen Wolter distributed a game-best eight assists to complement eight points and three steals.

Cael Jaskulke produced seven points, six rebounds and three assists for the Jaguars, while Carter Spear chipped in seven points.

The Jaguars scorched the nets on 24 of 42 attempts from 2-point distance for 57.1 percent, sank 5 of 12 shots behind the 3-point line and dropped in 12 of 21 free throws.

The Jaguars (3-0) travel to Cedar Mountain on Tuesday night.

Girls Basketball

Luverne 49, Fairmont 45 — Brooklynn VerSteeg netted 17 points to rally Luverne to a second-half comeback and four-point Big South Showcase victory over Fairmont on Saturday in Jackson.

Faith Olson connected on 5 of 7 shots from 3-point distance to produce a team-best 15 points to complement three steals for Fairmont.

Maggy Totzke went 3 of 7 from behind the 3-point arc to generate nine points for Fairmont, while Brittney Mosloski delivered eight points and nine rebounds.

Cadence Becker also scored eight points, while teammate Madysen Allen doled out three assists for Fairmont, while built a 30-23 halftime lead.

Fairmont made 16 of 42 field goals, including 8 of 22 from behind the 3-point line, to go with 5 of 9 at the free throw line.

Fairmont (1-2) travels to New Ulm on Thursday night.

St. Clair 62, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 49 — Kayli Hinze netted a game-leading 22 points to twist the Cyclones to a 13-point Valley Conference victory over the Jaguars on Saturday in St. Clair.

Michaelah Petrowiak neared double-double territory by scoring 16 points to complement grabbing nine rebounds for the Jaguars.

Samantha Moeller scored eight points for the Jaguars, while Jayme Balcom generated seven points, a game-best 11 rebounds and three assists.

Lydia Steinhaus supplied seven points and 10 rebounds for GHECTML, which made 19 of 53 shots from 2-point range, 1 of 4 behind the 3-point arc and 8 of 20 at the free throw line.

The Jaguars (2-2, 0-1 Valley) travel to Austin on Tuesday night to face Austin Pacelli/Lyle.
