Heckman powers Jaguars basketball team to opening win

SLEEPY EYE — Adam Heckman literally soared to new heights during Monday night’s season-opening basketball game.

Heckman utilized every inch of his 6-foot, 5-inch frame to pour in a career-best 30 points to complement grabbing a game-best 15 rebounds to power the Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain Jaguars to a 58-49 non-league triumph over the Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights in Sleepy Eye.

The Jaguars’ sophomore center connected on 13 of 19 field goals and 4 of 6 free throws to pace his impressive double-double performance.

Cayden Fischer sank 8 of 9 free throws down the stretch in the second half to pace his 10-point effort for the Jaguars. Fischer also pocketed a team-best five steals and distributed four assists.

Cael Jaskulke delivered solid all-around numbers of six points, five assists, four blocked shots and four rebounds to the visitors’ winning ways, while teammate Owen Wolter tallied five points and doled out three assists.

Matt Heckman pulled down five rebounds and Carter Spear added four points for the Jaguars, who held a 26-21 halftime lead.

The Jaguars connected on 20 of 37 attempts from 2-point distance for 54 percent, made just 1 of 8 behind the 3-point arc and sank 15 of 20 free throws for 75 percent.

Truman/Martin Luther/GHEC (1-0) opens the Tip-off Tournament against Hope Academy at 6 p.m. Friday night in Madelia. The tournament changes its venue to Truman on Saturday.

Girls Basketball

North Union 48, West Bend-Mallard 26 — Senior post player Chloe Lofstrom produced 11 points and freshman wing Olivia VonBank supplied 10 points to engineer the Warriors’ season-opening Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Wolverines on Monday night in West Bend, Iowa.

Point guard Lily Henderson contributed seven points to North Union’s winning ways, while teammate Vanessa VonBank added six points.

The Warriors built a 25-12 lead by intermission before outscoring the Wolverines 23-14 in the second half.

North Union (1-0) plays host to North Iowa at 6 p.m. Friday night in Armstrong.
