North Union girls runners place 11th at league meet

MASON CITY, Iowa — Hannah Morphew and Nick Schiltz led the North Union Warriors during the Top of Iowa Conference cross country meet Thursday at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.

Morphew led the North Union girls to an 11th-place finish as a team with her 38th-place overall finish in 24:25, while teammate Cassie Beadle finished 40th overall in 24:31.

Hanna Sandvig was close behind, finishing with the time of 24:33 for 41st place, Sam Nielsen took 54th in 25:31 and Jordyn Cummins finished 67th with a time of 26:21.

Schiltz led the Warrior boys with his 26th-place time of 18:25, while teammate Trevor Kruse took 66th at 20:09.

Gage Madden finished 73rd with a time of 20:36 and Chase Cummins took 104th at 23:05.

North Union hits the course again at the Class 1A district meet at 4 p.m. next Thursday at Ridge View.

7th-grade football squad caps undefeated season

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals’ seventh-grade football team completed an undefeated season on Tuesday night at Mahoney Field in Fairmont.

Fairmont delivered a 36-12 loss to the Albert Lea Tigers to cap a perfect campaign.

Hank Artz paced the Cardinals’ ground game by generating 74 yards and one touchdown.

Artz also recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, in addition to taking a kickoff the distance for another six points.

Like Artz, Elijah Johnson utilized his all-purpose skills to generate 14 points in the Cardinals’ winning performance.

Johnson crossed the goal line on a run for a touchdown, returned a kickoff 70 yards for another score and sprinted for a 2-point conversion.

Nolan Schultz contributed four points to Fairmont’s winning ways by rushing for a pair of 2-point conversions in the team’s season finale.
