Martin Co. West gridders stampede Windom, 43-0

WINDOM — Payton Anderson ran for 110 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Martin County West Mavericks football team to a 43-0 win over the Windom Area Eagles on Friday night in Windom.

Jaxson Rohman added 105 yards on the ground, while MCW quarterback Wyatt Geistfeld contributed 73 yards through the air, including two touchdown passes. He also ran for 22 yards and a touchdown.

The Maverick offense tallied 332 yards on the night, with 41 rushing attempts for 259 yards. Geistfeld was 4 for 8 passing with no interceptions.

Derek Dunlop was the leading receiver for the Mavericks, catching two balls, both for touchdowns. He netted 56 yards on the plays.

The MCW defense snatched four interceptions, with one each from Payton Anderson, Rohman, Dunlop and Joseph Forsberg.

Miles Fitzgerald led the team in tackles with seven, while Anderson had six.

Anderson began the scoring for MCW at the 6:45 mark of the first quarter, running the ball in from 3 yards out. The PAT made it 7-0, which remained the score going into the second quarter.

The Mavs opened up the game in the second frame, with Geistfeld throwing a 22-yard strike to Dunlop at the 11:20 mark, then hitting Dunlop again from 34 yards out with 6:34 to go. Anderson capped off the quarter at the 2:32 mark with a 2-yard run. Alec Weir kicked the extra points on each occasion, except following the second TD pass to Dunlop, when the Mavs ran in the conversion for 2 points.

In the third quarter, Geistfeld put another touchdown on the board with a 23-yard run at the 9:25 mark. Weir added the point after.

Anderson rounded out the scoring with a 48-yard sprint at the 9:22 mark of the fourth quarter. Weir’s kick was good.

Windom managed just 97 total yards of offense, running the ball 29 times for 72 yards. The Eagles were 4-15 passing for 25 yards and the four interceptions.

The game was the first of the season for both teams. Martin County West travels to Redwood Valley on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.

Spring Grove 30, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 28 — The defending Class 9-Man state champion Lions halted a potential game-tying 2-point conversion pass with 25 seconds remaining in regulation to fend off the Jaguars, 30-28, during Thursday night’s football season-opener in Truman.

Trailing 30-14 after three completed quarters, quarterback Owen Wolter and running back Carter Spear triggered the Jaguars’ fourth-quarter comeback.

Spear, who produced a game-best 165 yards on 23 carries, busted loose for a 19-yard touchdown with 8:58 left in the fourth quarter. Wolter then ran for the 2-point conversion to narrow the Jaguars’ gap to 30-22.

With 25 seconds to go in regulation, Wolter fired a 9-yard scoring strike to Spear to inch the Jaguars within two points of the Lions. Spring Grove’s defense halted the conversion pass to hold on for the victory.

Wolter completed 7 of 13 passes for 113 yards and three TDs to complement 19 carries for 99 yards rushing. Spear also pocketed five receptions for 70 yards and a pair of TDs, while teammate Kaiden Musser garnered two catches for 43 yards and one score.

Quarterback Chandler Bergrud connected on 14 of 24 passes for 125 yards and three TDs to top Spring Grove. Bergrud also topped the century mark on the ground by gaining 111 yards and one score on 13 totes.

Kyle Hagen grabbed three passes for 35 yards, including two TDs, for the Lions, while Isaac Griffin pocketed six receptions for 56 yards and another score.

Mitchell Reynolds topped Spring Grove’s rushing performance with 127 yards and one TD on 11 carries.

Hagen recorded 10 tackles to pace the Lions’ defense, while Reynolds and Tristan Hammel collected one interception apiece.

Spear tallied 10 tackles to pace the Jaguars’ defensive effort, Kaden Moon recorded 7 1/2 stops, while Bryant Berhow chipped in five tackles.

Wolter’s 17-yard TD strike to Musser, followed by Wolter’s 2-point conversion run, gave the Jaguars’ their only lead of the game at 14-12 with 12:00 remaining in the second quarter.

Bergrud and Spring Grove then reeled off three unanswered scores to bridge halftime to produce enough points to stave off the Jaguars down the stretch.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain /Truman (0-1) travels to Hills next Friday night to face Hills-Beaver Creek, while Spring Grove (1-0) plays host to LeRoy-Ostrander in a 7 p.m. game.
