B.E. Area duo loses pair at state tennis

MINNEAPOLIS — Blue Earth Area’s Julia Hanson and Te’a Armstrong lost their first-round Class A state doubles match on Thursday before falling in straight sets during the consolation bracket at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

No. 3-seeded Avery Stilwell and Shanna Kinny of Litchfield served back-to-back 6-1 set losses to Hanson and Armstrong in opening-round action.

Hanson and Armstrong then squared off against Minnewaska Area’s Anna Vold and Greta Reichmann in a playback match on Thursday.

Vold and Reichmann ended the Blue Earth Area tandem’s season by capturing set victories of 6-3, 6-3.

In Class A state singles action, St. James Area’s Renata Hernandez netted a 6-4, 6-0 opening-round victory over Roseau’s Jodi Ostroski.

No. 1-seeded Lainey Axell of The Blake School then posted a 6-0, 6-0 quarterfinal win over Hernandez to end the St. James Area junior standout’s state meet.

Maple River sophomore Vanessa Barkosky, the Section 3 champion, lost both of her state matches on Thursday.

Pine City’s Lydia Adams outslugged Barkosky in first-round play, 6-4, 6-4, before Park Rapids Area’s Natalie Kinkel rallied past Barkosky in the consolation bracket, 6-7 (0-7), 7-5, (10-4).
