MAPLETON — The Maple River Eagles girls tennis team opened its season by posting a 5-2 non-league victory over the Fairmont Cardinals on Tuesday in Mapleton.

No. 3 singles player Brittany Bass outslugged Katelyn Langworthy, 6-4, 6-2, to generate one of Fairmont’s team tallies, while Cardinal teammates Makena Rodriguez and Lauren Green fended off Chloe Flitterer and Gretchen Marble by netting a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision at second doubles.

Vanessa Barkosky garnered a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Fairmont’s Sydney Hainy at the No. 1 position in the singles bracket, while Maple River’s Olivia Pfeffer topped Claire Nemmers at second singles, 6-1, 6-3. Abby Bruegger rounded out the hometown Eagles’ singles performance by posting a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Briana Joseph at the fourth position in the lineup.

Sam Kunkel and Sydney Trio combined court skills at No. 1 doubles to outlast the Cardinals’ Maggy Totzke and Bergen Senf, 6-2, 7-5, while the Eagles’ third doubles tandem of Sophie Christian and Kayla Rigdon reeled off straight set wins of 6-2 and 6-3 to top Holly Petrowiak and Lauren Davis at the third doubles spot.

Fairmont (0-3) faces Chanhassen, Montevideo and host St. James Area at 9 a.m. Friday in the St. James Area Quadrangular. Maple River (1-0) competes in the St. James Area Invite at 9 a.m. today.
