Martins to host Irish in opener

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Martins play host to the Milroy Irish in Game 1 of their best-of-3 Region 13C amateur baseball championship series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

The Martins face the Irish in Game 2 on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Milroy. If a Game 3 is necessary, Milroy returns to Fairmont on Sunday for a 2 p.m. showdown.

Both the Martins and Irish have qualified for the Class ‘C’ state tournament, with the current series determining each team’s seed.

Zieske, Smick net top honors

FAIRMONT — Tyrell Zieske and Stuart Smick finished first at the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively, during the 2017 Fairmont Summer Tennis Program.

Lauren Green won at the third position, while Natalie Abel won at the No. 4 spot. Shannon Green took top honors at the fifth position, while Anika Haugen and Abigail Peyman were tops in the No. 6 and 7 positions, respectively.

Team 5 won the team portion of the four-week tennis program. Members included Blake Haugen, Evan Carlson, Lauren Green, Apoorva Komaragiri, Jack Hagen, Lily Laven and Taylor Madsen.
