Jaguars offering fan bus to state tilt

GRANADA — A fan bus will be available for all those interested in attending the No. 3-seeded Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Jaguars’ Class A state baseball quarterfinal against Wabasha-Kellogg on Thursday. The cost is $10 per person, which must be paid in advance.

The bus exits from Granada at 2:45 p.m. Thursday and will stop at Martin Luther High School in Northrop and Truman High School before arriving at the Mini Met in Jordan for the 5:30 p.m. game.

To reserve a seat, call Martin Luther High School at 507-436-5249 by noon Wednesday. A minimum of 25 passengers is required or the bus will be cancelled.

There also will be a community send-off for the Jaguars team at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Granada. The bus will be escorted through Northrop and Truman.

Fans are encouraged to greet the team at a time to be determined Friday in a ‘welcome back’ celebration at the baseball field in Truman.

Fairmont 16U softball wins tourney

ST. PETER — The Fairmont Cardinal Power 16U girls fastpitch softball team won the St. Peter tournament during weekend diamond action.

Fairmont squeezed by the Mankato Peppers, 2-1, during its tournament opener. Ana Krause, Sydney Hainy and Lexus Wojtanowicz each contributed a hit to Fairmont’s winning ways.

Jen Moeller gave up one run on one hit, walked two and struck out eight to earn the win.

St. Peter downed Fairmont in second-round play, 6-1. Wojtanowicz, Liz Oothoudt, Jaiden Leiding and Kaitlyn Freese each collected a hit.

Freese gave up one run on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts in handling Fairmont’s pitching.

Fairmont rebounded with a 10-0 win over Byron in the third round. Moeller pitched a no-hitter, walked four and struck out four.

Leiding had two hits in the win, while Wojtanowicz, Moeller, Freese, Cambrie Anderson and Haley Meyers each finished with a hit.

In Game 5, the Cardinals defeated LeSueur, 5-0. Wojtanowicz provided the team with two hits. Hainy, Oothoudt, Leiding, Anderson and Freese chipped in a hit each.

Freese took the mound and totaled five strikeouts with two walks while giving up one hit to earn the shutout victory for Fairmont.

The Cardinals won the tournament championship, 7-6. Wojtanowicz produced two hits, while Hainy, Oothoudt, Anderson, Meyers and Whitney Scott contributed one hit apiece.

Jen Moeller pitched the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Freese worked the final 3 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on four hits. She walked one and struck out four.
