Klanderud-Head advance to 1A tennis semifinals

ST. PETER — Fairmont junior Carter Klanderud advanced to Day 2 of the Section 1A Individual tennis tournament for a second consecutive season.

Klanderud placed fourth during the 2016 sectional singles bracket, but joined forces with senior Tyler Head on Thursday to reach the semifinals of this year’s doubles bracket.

Klanderud and Head — who played at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, this spring — opened Day 1 individual action by coasting to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Waseca’s Jacob Butterfield and Jay Lewer to gain the next round.

The No. 3-seeded Klanderud and Head then combined court skills to eliminate St. Peter’s Liam Dixon and Bailey Moore by a 7-5, 6-1 score in the sectional quarterfinals at the Swanson Tennis Center on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus in St. Peter.

Klanderud and Head face No. 2-seeded Eric Chestowlowski and Dany Berbari of Rochester Lourdes in today’s 2 p.m. doubles semifinals. Chestowlowski and Berbari defeated Jerry Yang and Tony Wan of Winona Cotter, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, in the quarterfinals to advance to Day 2.

In the other half of the Section 1A doubles bracket, No. 1-seeded Rafat Solaiman and Drew Elofson of St. Peter will square off against No. 4-seeded Noah Morris and Pavao Veldic of Rochester Lourdes in today’s 2 p.m. semifinal back at the Swanson Tennis Center.

Solaiman and Elofson defeated St. James’ Cameron Giese and Brandon Johnson in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0.

Solaiman and Elofson posted a 6-0, 6-1 first-round win over Cotter’s Andre Russeau and Ian Modjeski, who eliminated Fairmont’s Ben Hernes and Tyrell Zieske in a play-in match, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

Morris and Veldic opened their day by netting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Blue Earth Area’s Dylan Herfindahl and Jack Barke.

Dixon and More eliminated Blue Earth Area’s Jack Frundt and Spencer Peterson in the first round, 6-3, 6-4.

In sectional singles play, top-seeded Peter Erickson of Lourdes and No. 4-seeded Sandin Skow of St. James will battle in one of today’s 2 p.m. singles semifinals, while No. 3-seeded Ryan Ortega of Cotter will duel No. 2-seeded Justin Bobo of Lourdes.

Fairmont senior Andy Hagen opened his day with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-0 comeback win over Cotter’s Matt Besek before falling to the No. 1-rated Erickson in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0.

Skow opened his day by shutting out Blue Earth Area’s James Greer before dispatching Schaeffer Academy’s Chris O’Driscoll in the quarters, 6-3, 6-0.

Ortega knocked out St. James’ Lucas Doll in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-3, while Bobo downed Waseca’s Charlie Huttermier in the quarters, 6-2, 6-0.

Huttermier began his day with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Fairmont’s Tony Joseph, while Bobo eliminated Schaeffer Academy’s Mary Hagan, 6-0, 6-1. Hagan defeated Blue Earth Area’s Parker Kienitz in a play-in match, 6-4, 6-0.
