Area tracksters gain sectional

WELLS — The Fairmont Cardinals boys and girls track & field teams took one last victory lap around the track at United South Central High on Thursday with much to celebrate. The Cardinals advanced all eight relay teams during the Section 2A, Sub-Section 5 Meet.

The Section 2A Meet starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, at Mankato West High School.

“That really made it a real team feel,” Cardinals head coach Bob Bonk said about the relay sweep. “So many people contributed across the board.”

Jenna Gustafson and Brooke Hunwardsen, who was third in the open 400, ran the first and third legs of the 4×100 and 4×200 relays for times of 52.62 and 1:50.98, respectively. Cori Emler took the handoff from Gustafson and Grace Higgins was the anchor in the 4×1, while Molly Hawkins was the second leg and Savanah Baker was the last leg of the 4×2.

Higgins took the lead in the winning 4×400 team and ran with Molly Hawkins, Joni Becker and Jenna Pavich, who won the 400-meter dash, for a time of 4:06.68. Molly Hawkins, Becker and Pavich teamed with Iliana Ramon to win the 4×800 relay in 10:08.55.

The Martin County West Mavericks finished behind Fairmont in the 4×400 and 4×800. Brooke Anderson, Olivia Anderson, Marissa Whitehead and Cora Olson timed a 4:13.73 in the 4×400. Brooke Anderson and Marissa Whitehead combined with Caitlin Whitehead and Logan Kosbab for a runner-up time of 10:21.92 in the 4×800.

Individually, Marissa Whitehead used her cross country skills to win the 3,200-meter run in 11:29.15. Ramon was the runner-up in 11:57.16, before Fairmont teammate Laura Thompson’s third-best time of 12:07.97. Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther Jayhawk Sylvia Rodriguez was fourth (12:57.76).

Fellow Jayhawk Renae Wallace eclipsed 1,000 career points in the sub-section meet and advanced to next Saturday’s meet in the high hurdles and triple jump.

“She’s been our leading scorer all season,” Jayhawks head coach Nick Willaert said about Wallace, who entered the meet with 999 1/2 points.

Wallace finished third in the hurdles (17.54) and was sandwiched between Olson and Jayda Rowen of MCW in the triple jump.

Olson was fourth in the long jump (15-8 1/4) and leaped to a winning 33 feet, 6 inches in the triple jump, followed by Wallace and Rowen with a 33-0 and 32-3 1/2, respectively. Hannah Johanson finished fourth (32-3) to reach the section meet and, along with Amy Denn, Lilly Maul and Alyssa Chloros, finished second in the 4×200 (1:52.99).

Johanson also posted a runner-up finish in the long jump with a measurement of 16-3 1/4. BEA’s Skylee Bell was third (15-9).

Fairmont’s Lizzy Subbert won the high hurdles in 16.56, with Blue Earth Area’s Melissa Hagedorn (17.26) and Sidney Blair (17.71) placing second and fourth.

Subbert and Bethany Linse tied for second in the high jump with a 4-10.

Alli Lardy continued her record-setting ways, measuring 42-2 to win the shot put and reset Fairmont’s record books. Teammates Brenna Cutler (40-4 1/2) and Claire Cutler (35-2 1/2) rounded out the top three spots, and MTGHECML’s Amy Denn earned the last advancing spot with a 32-11.

Claire Cutler had a personal best 111-5 to win the discus and Brenna Cutler was second with a 108-8. MCW thrower Makena Larson threw 97-8 for third, and BEA’s Lindsey Norman marked a fourth-best throw of 97-5.

Higgins earned second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.88 and Rowen got the fourth spot in 14.38. Lilly Maul of MTGHECML was second in the 200 with a time of 28.58.

The Bucs went 1-2-3 in the pole vault to reach the section meet. Nicole Lium got over 9-6 to win and Hagedorn measured 8-6 for a second-place showing. Heidi Herrmann tied with Fairmont’s Andrea Thate for third (8-6).

Hannah Johnson of BEA and Jayhawk Lizzie Cooling finished second and fourth with times of 1:03.30 and 1:04.53, respectively, in the 400. Jayhawk Sylvia Rodriguez (5:42.52) and Sarah Krumholz of Fairmont (5:52.18) finished third and fourth in the 1,600.

Sidney Blair won the 300-meter hurdles (49.87) for the Bucs. Sidney Blair ran with Hagedorn, Bell and Tea Armstrong for a second-best time of 53.17 in the 4×100.

On the boys’ side, Wyatt Quiring anchored the top 4×200 and 4×400 Fairmont relay teams. Quiring was preceded by Levi Bulfer, who was second in the pole vault, Tyler Johnson and Austin Schwidder in a time of 1:34.89 to win the 4×2, and followed Dayton Pasch, Dylan Kennedy and Andrew Moeller in the 4×400 with a 3:32.25.

“The guys’ 4×4 was by far their best of the year,” Bonk said.

Bulfer joined forces with Schwidder, Tyler Johnson and Shyiem Thomas for a 4×100 winning time of 45.83.

Leyton Becker, Moeller, Pasch and Kennedy won the 4×800 in 8:43.02.

Individually, Quiring won the 400 in 51.01 and Becker was second in the 800 (2:07.96). Hayden Berhow won the high jump (5-10), long jump (19-6 1/2) and triple jump (40-6) for the Cardinal triple crown. Teammates Lucas Simpson and Tyler Johnson finished second and third with both marking a 5-10 in the high jump, and Tyler Johnson was fourth in the triple jump (39-4 1/2).

Jayhawks Angel Zamora and Ramiro Zamora went 2-3 in the long jump with an 18-3 1/2 and 18-2, while MCW’s Andrew Ringnell posted a 39-5 1/2 for third in the triple jump. Jarly Godoy won the 1,600 in 4:52.52 and placed third in the 800 with a 2:08.91. MCW’s Kolton Larson finished the mile run in 4:53.22 for second before BEA’s Brady Olsen’s fourth-place time of 5:01.01.

Fairmont’s Kade Fritz and Theo Krumholz went 1-2 in the shot put with measurements of 48-4 and 44-10, respectively.

Reed Krieger won the pole vault for BEA (13-0) with teammate Rylee McGuire fourth with an 11-6.

MCW sprinter Dawson Burkhardt paced a 12.12 in the 100 before breaking the 200-meter tape in 23.89 to win both events.

“Dawson is working hard. He’s got a lot of goals set and he’s got a tough weekend next weekend,” MCW head coach Curtis Smith said.

Jayhawks’ Josh Sletta marked a second-place finish in both sprints, tying with United South Central’s Chris Martens in the 100 (12.29) and recording a time of 24.28 in the 200.

BEA’s Jordan Frandle marked a third-best time of 24.7 to earn a spot in the section meet and helped the Bucs to two of three relay runner-up spots. Frandle, Cameron Anderson, Clayton Johnson and Gunnar Fering ran the 4×200 in 1:37.94. Cameron Anderson, Austin Thielfoldt and Waylen Douglas ran with Frandle in the 4×100 (47.27).

Frandle also placed third in the discus (119-2) behind Fairmont’s Conner Tordsen’s winning throw of 130-10.

Adam Griffin, Brady Olsen, Clayton Johnson and Grant Strukel ran the 4×800 in 9:02.46 for the Bucs second-place finish.

Strukel won the 3,200-meter run in 10:28.86.

“It’s a good confidence builder for him to get a time like that,” Bucs head coach Tom Plocker said.

MCW’s Jake Lewis was third (11:07.14) and Darrian Kueker of Fairmont (11:13.78) was fourth in the 2-mile race.

Gunnar Fering added a Bucs’ win in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.07, with Seth Becker coming in fourth at 17.21. Cardinal Devin Johnson was second (17.15). Seth Becker and Devin Johnson went 2-3 in the 300-meter hurdles with times of 42.66 and 43.69, respectively.
