Eagles baseball zips Cardinals

FAIRMONT — New Ulm head baseball coach Kevin Briggs received a bit of a scare, and later, a double entendre of relief, during Tuesday’s Big South Conference clash in Fairmont.

Starting right-hander Andrew Peters and long reliever Alex Lund combined to hurl a three-hit shutout, while AJ Lassas went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to engineer the visiting Eagles’ 5-0 triumph over the Fairmont Cardinals at Herb Wolf Field.

“That batter (Nate Kallenbach) really hit the ball with authority. He (Peters) took the line-drive off his pitching arm in the forearm area,” Briggs said in reference to his starting pitcher’s early exit with one out in the top of the third inning. “You can see the (baseball’s) stitches on his arm. He seems OK, but he’s got quite a bruise. Now we’ll have to see how it is after the swelling goes down.”

Peters and Fairmont starting right-hander Sam Schwieger were locked up in a scoreless pitchers’ duel to that juncture, but Lund picked up where Peters left off on the hill.

“He’s struggled his last couple of times out (pitching), but he did a great job in short notice today,” Briggs said in reference to Lund. “He went out there, threw strikes, got outs and kept them from scoring, and that’s what we needed from him.”

Lund did not allow a run and surrendered only Dylan Gerken’s infield hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning in pitching almost flawlessly for 4 2/3 innings to earn the win. Lund struck out three and issued two walks.

“He (Lund) was the difference in the game today,” said Fairmont head coach Todd Sukalski. “We just couldn’t put anything together offensively against either Lund or Peters.”

Peters allowed a first-inning single to Brady Allen before giving up a leadoff hit to Jordan Wolter to open the Cardinals’ second at-bat.

While Fairmont managed just three hits, New Ulm bunched three of its four hits on the game during the fifth to produce three runs.

Cooper Yackley walked, swiped second base and wheeled to third when Keaton Knaak legged out a bunt hit to put Eagles on the corners to start the top of the fifth.

Brandon Mehlhop plated Yackley with a sacrifice fly to left before Hunter Ranweiler singled home Knaak for a 2-0 lead.

JT Hoffmann drew the first of his two walks before Lassas drilled an RBI single down the third base line for another run in the fifth.

New Ulm manufactured two more runs without the benefit of a hit during the sixth. Hoffmann and Lassas netted one RBI apiece via a bases-loaded walk and a hit-by-pitch with the bags filled.

Peters did not record a walk or a strikeout while allowing two hits in 2 1/3 innings of work to receive no decision.

Schwieger allowed four runs — three earned — on four hits, struck out four, walked three and hit one batter in five-plus frames to absorb the loss for the Cardinals.

Kallenbach gave up one unearned run, walked two and hit one batter in 1 hitless inning of relief. Lance Becker worked a 1-2-3 top of the seventh for Fairmont.
