Subbert’s versatility nets points for FHS

FAIRMONT — Fairmont junior Lizzy Subbert couldn’t help but to laugh when asked about her vertical.

“It’s got a lot better since I was younger,” Subbert said.

Competing in the high jump, triple jump and both sets of hurdles certainly helps with that. After winning the Cardinals’ pentathlon at the beginning of the season for a second year in a row, Subbert has become a major point producer for Fairmont.

“I’m feeling pretty good. Everything’s gone mostly the way I want it to,” Subbert said. “I’ve been having a little pain in my shins lately, so I think it could go a little better. But it’s progressing as the season goes on.”

So far this season, she’s been a steady top five finisher in each event during the meets. Last Thursday, Subbert won both hurdles, the high jump and triple jump to pace the Cardinals’ triangular sweep.

Despite having a full schedule at the meets, Subbert competes effortlessly. Cardinals head coach Bob Bonk commends her on her ability to be at the top of her game at all times.

“Even though nothing is super long, that’s a difficult combination because hurdles have a lot of challenges to them. The triple jump can be pretty rough on the body, and the high jump takes hours often because you’re always raising the bar,” he said. “From the time she gets off the bus until almost the end of the meet, she’s doing something — warming up and cooling down, and doing the next thing, checking in and checking out.”

As the top hurdler and jumper, Subbert is able to help out in the growth and maturation of her younger teammates.

“I just like to help in any way possible because with so many of us, it’s kind of hard for him (head coach Bob Bonk) to be helping us all at once,” Subbert said. “So, if there’s things that I see or ways that I can help someone, I’ll just make sure to say something and give them some help in any way possible. I do that for high jump, too.”

With much of the season behind and Sentinel Relays coming up on Friday, Subbert is ready for more competition in prepping for the postseason.

“I’m looking forward to competing against all (Class AA schools) because when the bigger meets come up is when the really hard competition comes out. I feel like that’s when I start to actually hit my full potential, so I’m excited to see how well I can do against the really good schools,” she said.
