Top-seeded JCC ends MCW’s hoops season

JACKSON — In 1993, Ice Cube rapped about having “messed around and got a triple-double” in his song, “It Was a Good Day.” On Saturday, Ryan Christopher almost had a triple-double, but still had a good day.

The senior guard’s 22 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and six assists allowed the Class 2A, No. 15-ranked and No. 1-seeded Jackson County Central Huskies an 82-50 win over the No. 8-seeded Martin County West Mavericks during Section 3AA, South Sub-Section basketball quarterfinals.

JCC head coach Trent Sukalski described Christopher’s performance as “outstanding” and “incredible.”

“He could score, take it to the rim. He could shoot the 3, rebound, run the show,” Sukalski said. “Ryan played fantastically tonight.”

Martin County West finished the year at 7-19. JCC advances to play No. 4-seeded Minneota (16-8), which defeated No. 5-seeded Windom Area (9-17), 69-64, in overtime. The teams play at 6 p.m. Thursday in Windom in the South semifinals.

Ironically, the Mavericks started out with the lead before Huskies senior forward Chris Gumto hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 6. Freshman guard Rudy Voss added a trey before senior center Zach Bargfrede added a layup for a 14-8 advantage.

Ryan Christopher assisted on all three shots before picking the ball away from the Mavericks for a fastbreak bucket at the 11:36 mark of the opening frame.

“Jackson’s just such a good team. … They take the ball to the basket so fast. It’s a tough matchup for us,” Mavericks head coach Cliff Anderson said.

Huskies senior guard Carter Heinrichs connected with senior guard Keegan Klontz for a quick bucket before Klontz converted a rebound into an assist on Bergfrede’s shot to increase the lead to 12.

Huskies senior guard Easton Bahr laid in a bucket before Mavericks junior guard Kooper Janssen broke up the Huskies’ 16-0 run with a much-needed basket.

The Mavericks got the 12-10 scoring edge in the final five minutes of the half, but still trailed, 39-24.

“We didn’t rebound the ball the way we needed to to start the game,” Anderson said. “They outrebounded us and got second- and third-chance points there, so that was the difference in the first half.”

The Huskies won the rebounding battle, 39-25, in the game.

The Mavericks inched within 10 to start the final half as junior center Logan Ebeling went 3-for-4 on two trips to the charity stripe, and senior guard Josh Bjerken converted a defensive rebound into a transition score.

Voss scored nine of his 21 bench points during the next six minutes for the Huskies as the team went up, 59-37. The team then went on a 12-0 scoring surge, ignited by senior forward Nico Feroni, who started with a free throw before netting a hook shot.

With 7:57 remaining in the game, Bjerken found junior forward Matt Holm for a 3-pointer to end the Mavericks’ scoring drought. The Huskies held the Mavericks to eight points in the final five minutes to earn the 32-point victory. The Huskies have won 12 of their last 13 games.

“We didn’t play aggressively for the whole game and we’ve got to be able to do that,” Sukalski said. “But this time of the year, you just want to win and move on to the next round, and that’s what we did.”
