No. 5 Loyola runs by MCW hoopsters

TRIMONT — When Mankato Loyola senior sharpshooter Lindsey Theuninck finds her offensive rhythm, points literally rain from the rafters.

Alyssa Williamson’s end-to-end runner through traffic inched the Martin County West Mavericks within one at 11-10 with 6:30 remaining in Thursday night’s Valley Conference basketball clash in Trimont.

Two and a half minutes later, however, Theuninck warmed the nets by drilling the first of four consecutive 3-pointers to trigger the visiting Crusaders’ 17-0 offensive avalanche to build a 28-12 halftime edge.

Theuninck finished with a game-best double-double performance of 29 points and 11 rebounds to complement four steals and four assists to power Class 1A, No. 5-ranked Loyola to a 57-31 league triumph over the hometown Mavericks.

“People always talk about how many points she scores, but they don’t realize how well she rebounds,” Crusader head coach Rick Theuninck said about his daughter. “Lindsey is about 65 points away from 3,000 for her (sixth-year) career, but she’s also about 30 rebounds shy of 1,000.”

Alyssa Williamson and Sierra Williamson combined with Renae Eckmann to ignite the Mavericks’ quick surge out of the second half’s starting gate to whittle their deficit to 32-20.

Maia Taylor, who pulled down nine boards to pace MCW’s 40-37 rebounding edge, spotted Eckmann for a 15-foot jumper out of the break before Alyssa Williamson netted three of her co-team-high eight points on a traditional 3-point play.

RaeAnn Dose, who tallied 19 points to go with five steals and three assists, answered with a baseline jumper for Loyola before Alyssa Williamson sank a solo free throw.

Megan Mettler garnered one of her 10 rebounds for a putback basket for the Crusaders before Sierra Williamson tallied two of her co-team-high eight points off a pinpoint pass from Hunter Wrightson.

Unfortunately for MCW, Loyola hit the hometown lineup with a dose of Theuninck and Dose during an ensuing 9-0 run to put the game out of reach at 41-20.

“We truly played well defensively during the first 12 minutes of the opening half, and forced Loyola to take some shots they didn’t like,” Maverick head coach Rodger Taylor said in reference to the Crusaders’ game-opening 0-for-8 field-goal shooting effort.

“We showed our youth and inexperience in a ‘big-game’ setting, and didn’t close out on defense and that was the difference,” Taylor added.

“Don’t worry — we’ll definitely learn a lot from the experience and be a better team for it.”

Theuninck, who will play basketball next season for South Dakota State University, connected on 9 of 19 field goals — including 5 of 9 behind the 3-point arc — to go with her all-around stellar numbers. Dose displayed her shooting skills by drilling 8 of 16 from the floor to pace her 19-point performance.

“Lindsey and RaeAnn score a lot of points for us, but they also look to get everybody involved in the game by doing all the other things like passing, playing defense and rebounding,” said Rick Theuninck.

Wrightson finished with six points for the Mavericks, while Sierra Williamson grabbed seven rebounds to go with her eight points.

Martin County West (9-4, 5-2 Valley) travels to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Tuesday night.

Mankato Loyola (13-1, 7-0) hits the road to Lake Crystal tonight.
