BLAINE — The Northern Lakes Lightning struck for four first-period goals to ignite a 6-1 victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during the third and final round of the Schwan’s Cup girls hockey tournament on Wednesday in Blaine.

Trailing 5-0, the Cardinals’ Taylor Nuss managed to spoil Lightning goaltender Chaia Tulenchik’s shutout bid by finding the net 7:59 into the second period. Nuss converted Mackenzie Householder’s assist into Fairmont Area’s only goal of the contest.

Sydney Tietz, who distributed an opening-period assist, capped Northern Lakes’ scoring by producing back-to-back goals during the middle segment.

Tietz cashed in a double-assist from Sam Gutzman and Savannah Abear for a 5-0 advantage 2:12 into the second frame. Tietz added her second goal and third point of the game by converting Mandi Soderholm’s pass into the round-robin tournament game’s final goal at the 15:29 mark of the second period.

Neither team generated a goal during the third frame.

Hayden Boelter opened the Lightning’s point production by netting an unassisted goal just 4:45 into the game. Soderholm scored off of a Gutzman assist only 1:06 later for a quick 2-0 lead.

Abear tallied an unassisted goal 13:59 into the opening segment for Northern Lakes before Gutzman connected for a goal off a double-pass from Tietz and Ashley Kosloski with only 18 seconds remaining in the first 17-minute segment.

Tulenchik turned away 18 of 19 Cardinal shots to net the victory for the Lightning.

Netminder Emily O’Connor stopped 9 of 14 Lightning shots for Fairmont Area, while teammate Sadie Sandersfeld knocked away 12 of 13 Northern Lakes shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (3-8-1) is idle until traveling to Windom on Thursday, Jan. 5, for a 5 p.m. Big South Conference clash with the Eagles.
