New Ulm coasts by Fairmont Area Cardinals

NEW ULM — Ally Steffensmeier and Ali Beltz each scored two goals in the New Ulm Eagles’ 9-0 shutout win over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during Big South Conference girls hockey action on Tuesday night.

Steffensmeier scored the Eagles’ first goal with 6:36 to go in the opening period.

The Eagles then went on a six-goal scoring surge in the middle frame.

Dani Weiss scored a goal at the 12:50 mark of the second period before Elle Cooper added another less than a minute later. Ali Beltz scored next and Steffensmeier swiped in her second goal of the night.

Mackenzie Depew and Ashtyn Wiltscheck added a goal apiece for a 7-0 Eagles lead going into the final intermission.

Beltz knocked in her second goal at the 9:09 mark of the third period and McKenna Strong marked the ninth Eagles goal five minutes later.

Karlie Ries earned the shutout victory with six saves.

Cardinals goalie Sadie Sandersfeld rejected 53 Eagles shots in two period. Emily O’Connor relieved Sandersfeld in the third period and recorded 15 saves.

Fairmont Area (2-3-1) hosts Mankato West at 7:30 p.m. Thursday  night at Martin County Arena.
