Pavich, Moeller pace FHS to 1st, 3rd at TMB

TRACY – Jenna Pavich established a new course record to capture top individual honors in powering the Class A No. 2-ranked Fairmont Cardinal girls cross country lineup to a first-place finish at the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Invitational on Thursday in Tracy.

While Iliana Ramon and Molly Hawkins joined the Class A 10th-ranked Pavich in the competition’s top 10 tier, Andrew Moeller pocketed seventh place overall to steer the Fairmont boys team to a third-place showing.

“We’re just thankful that Tracy-Milroy-Balaton let us compete in the race at the last minute,” Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said in reference to the invite’s late addition after the Cardinals’ originally-scheduled competition – the Tri-City United Invite in Montgomery – was cancelled on Wednesday due to the course’s soggy conditions.

Pavich covered the 5,000-meter distance in 20 minutes, 25 seconds to earn first place in pacing the Cardinals’ 34-97 margin of victory over runner-up Canby.

“Jenna ran extremely well again, while I thought our girls, overall, really packed it in tightly and that’s the key to having success as a team,” said Bonk.

Iliana Ramon produced a fifth-place overall time of 21:27 to pack scoring punch for Fairmont, while Molly Hawkins claimed ninth place overall by crossing the finish line in 21:46.

Seventh-grader Laura Thompson made her varsity cross country debut by netting fourth on the Cardinals’ squad en route to a 13th-place showing with a 5K time of 22:01.

Sarah Krumholz took 14th overall with a time of 22:04 for Fairmont, while Tabitha Thatcher garnered 15th by finishing the race in 22:08.

Emily Haugen generated a time of 22:38 to pocket 23rd overall for the red-and-white, Lizzy Subbert captured the next spot with a mark of 22:50, Megan Hawkins produced a time of 23:14 to net 27th place, while Anna Sundblad rounded out the Cardinals’ 10 varsity runners with a 42nd-place showing of 24:13.

Windom Area tallied 55 points to win the boys’ team crown, Murray County Central merited runner-up honors with 79, while Fairmont claimed third at 87.

“I thought our boys did a nice job of placing third out of 13 complete teams today,” said Bonk. “It was a hilly course, but it was great viewing for the spectators, and the meet was well-organized.”

Moeller crossed the 5K finish line in 18:19 to break into the top 10 individual placers at seventh, while teammates Nathan Willett and Darrian Kueker each posted top-20 times.

Willett covered the distance in 18:55 to take 16th place overall, while Kueker turned in a time of 19:09 to pocket 19th place for the Cardinals.

Dayton Pasch netted a time of 19:33 to place 24th for Fairmont, Ben Huinker compiled a mark of 19:48 to collect 31st place, while Dylan Kennedy ran a 19:58 to garner 36th overall.

Brandon Williams merited 47th overall by crossing the finish line in 20:30, Cody Lane claimed 51st in 20:46, Jacob Lueth finished in 21:29 to take 66th, while Charles Garbers turned in a time of 21:52 to net 75th overall for the Cardinals.

Central Minnesota Christian’s Matthew VanEps ran a time of 17:29 to win the invite’s boys’ individual championship.

Fairmont competes in the 49th edition of the Turkey Trot Invite at 4:30 p.m. next Thursday in Worthington.
