North Union places 6th at state

FORT DODGE, Iowa – Back-to-back sixth-place showings at the Iowa Class 2A state softball tournament.

North Union (33-6) generated a baker’s dozen worth of hits to pound out a 13-5 consolation semifinal victory over Central Springs on Thursday morning at the Rogers Sports Complex to earn a spot in the fifth-place state clash in Fort Dodge.

Unfortunately for the four-time state-qualifying Warriors, I-35 ace pitcher Carlyn Stanley fired a three-hit complete game and went 2-for-3 with a game-best three RBIs to power the Roadrunners’ 7-3 triumph to garner fifth place on Thursday afternoon.

“When you think of it in terms of there are about 80 schools in Class 2A, and 72 of them don’t get to come here to play this week, we accomplished a lot by placing sixth for the second straight season,” said North Union head coach Art Ingalls, who also guided the program to a state runner-up showing in 2011 after placing sixth in the 2010 state tournament.

“Mid-90s (degrees) with a heat index of 113 today took their tolls on us. (Starting pitcher) Anna (Ingalls) just ran out of gas in our second game today because our second pitcher, Kate (Anderson), had hurt her knee previously and couldn’t pitch.”

Anna Ingalls, however, hurled a four-hit complete-game gem and produced two hits offensively to prove a vital cog in the Warriors’ eight-run, time-limited triumph over the Panthers in Game 1 on Thursday.

“You had better score early and score often when all of the consolation games have 90-minute time limits,” said Art Ingalls.

North Union did exactly that at Central Springs’ expense in the consolation semifinal, piling up five runs in both the first and second innings by batting completely through the order each time.

Anna Ingalls reached on an error, Maddie Rolling singled and Sarah Rolling hammered her 16th home run of the campaign to stake the Warriors to a quick 3-0 lead.

Bre Anderson singled, took second base on a wild pitch, motored to third on Emma Engelby’s bunt and scored on Aly Bierstedt’s RBI single. Bierstedt then circled the bases when Rory McClellan lofted a towering RBI double into right-center for a 5-0 margin.

Anna Ingalls tripled inside the left-field line to set the table for the Warriors’ five-run second at-bat before scoring on Maddie Rolling’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Sarah Rolling followed with a walk before Maddie Rolling crossed the plate on Shaylee Hanning’s RBI single to left. Engelby bunted for a hit to load the bases before Sarah Rolling scored on a walk to Bierstedt.

McClellan, who had batted only 11 times during the regular season, then drilled a two-run single up the middle to widen the Warriors’ margin to 10-3.

The Panthers combined back-to-back walks to Taylor Navratil and Kaylee Parks with Anna Dietrich’s three-run HR to produce three runs in the bottom of the first.

Central Springs starting pitcher Hannah Ausenhus then assisted her own cause in the second by drilling a leadoff home run to pare the Panthers’ gap to 10-4.

Ingalls’ RBI single and Maddie Rolling’s run-scoring fielder’s choice highlighted North Union’s three-run top of the fourth.

Dietrich, who went 2-for-3, then generated her fourth RBI of the game by doubling home Parks for a solo run in the fifth. Parks had singled with two out.

Ingalls, Maddie Rolling, Engelby, Bierstedt and McClellan each collected two of the Warriors’ 13 hits on the consolation semifinal.

Ingalls struck out three, walked two and hit one batter in five frames to net the complete-game win.

Despite Kate Anderson’s RBI single and Bre Anderson’s run-scoring fielder’s choice to stake North Union to a 2-0 first-inning lead in the fifth-place game, I-35 answered with Carlyn Stanley’s RBI single off the right-field fence in the home half of the first before plating three more runs in the second.

Riley Morris’ leadoff double, the second of three walks issued to Lilly Miller and Carlyn Stanley’s two-run double highlighted the Roadrunners’ second at-bat. Carlyn Stanley later scored on Kate Stanley’s RBI single.

I-35 manufactured three runs without collecting a hit during a three-walk fourth, while Kate Anderson lined an RBI single to plate pinch runner Victoria Laubenthal during North Union’s fifth.

Kate Anderson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Bre Anderson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Ingalls added a hit.

Ingalls allowed seven runs – four earned – on five hits, struck out one and walked seven in four frames to take the loss.

Carlyn Stanley gave up three runs – one earned – on four hits, fanned one and walked three in five innings.

Morris went 2-for-3 with a double, while Miller walked three times and scored three runs for I-35.
