Fairmont Speech wins JWP Tournament

FAIRMONT — On Saturday, March 16, twenty-three members of the Fairmont Speech Team competed at the JWP “Bulldog” Speech Tournament at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School in Janesville, Minn.

In team sweepstakes results, Fairmont took 1st place with 141 points, Mankato East took 2nd place with 56 points, and St. Clair took 3rd place with 49 points.

For individual varsity division results, Junior Zoey Tasseff took 2nd place in Creative Expression; Junior Grace Simpson took 3rd place in Dramatic Interpretation; Juniors Grace Simpson and Oliver Thedens took 2nd place in Duo Interpretation; Junior Oliver Thedens was the champion and Freshman Allie Streit took 5th place in Extemporaneous Reading; Senior Andrew Haefner took 2nd place and Freshman Clark Hazard took 3rd place in Extemporaneous Speaking; Senior Abi Peyman was the champion and Senior Isaiah Lockwood took 2nd place in Great Speeches; Freshman Leon Yang took 2nd place and Sophomore Thomas Hamlet took 6th place in Humorous Interpretation; Senior Sydney Blomster was the champion and Junior Kelsey Hunter took 3rd place in Informative Speaking; Sophomore Bel Lutterman was the champion, Senior Isaiah Lockwood took 2nd place and Junior Alayna Haefner took 4th place In Original Oratory.

For individual novice division results, Freshman Norah Heille took 2nd place in Dramatic Interpretation; Freshman Annie Reyelts and 8th Grader Evan Reyelts took 4th place In Duo Interpretation; Junior Isaac Thomas took 3rd place and Freshman Gabbie Thoney took 4th place in Humorous Interpretation; Freshman Norah Heille was the champion in Prose; and 7th Grader Sophia Streit took 2nd place in Storytelling.

Fairmont Speech competes again on Thursday, March 21, at the Big South Conference Speech Tournament in Worthington and hosts their home invitational on Saturday, March 23, at Fairmont High School. The tournament begins 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and concludes around 3:30 p.m. Come support Fairmont Speech and watch rounds. Stop at the Fairmont High School main office and see the tournament staff if you need help navigating the school. Rounds are at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. You can come to the school any time. Please enter through the Horseshoe. The cost is free. Fairmont Speech Team is coached by Kathleen Walker, Erik Walker and Miles Duffey.
