North Union wins 14th of last 15

SWEA CITY — Kate Anderson dazzled again.

For the second time in two days, Anderson threw a complete game shutout.

This time to lead the North Union Warriors to a 5-0 win against the St. Edmond, Fort Dodge Gaels on Thursday.

Anderson gave up five hits and three walks while striking out three on the way to her third pitching win in a two-day span.

A clean defensive game from the Warriors helped Anderson on her way to the victory.

All while solid offensive output put the team in control throughout.

The Warriors offense took charge in the first inning, loading the bases with only one out, but were unable to push across any runs.

In the second, they loaded the bases again, this time able to get a runner across home plate.

Victoria Laubenthal got the inning started for the Warriors with a single that just got over the outstretched glove of the Gaels second baseman.

Laubenthal advanced all the way to third during Kaitlyn Bierstedt’s at-bat because of two wild pitches in the dirt.

Bierstedt took a walk and Hope Steinberger hit a hard ground ball toward third base.

The ball was fielded cleanly but the third baseman was too worried about Laubenthal and never threw to first to get Steinberger.

With the bases loaded, Kate Anderson helped her own cause with a hard single between shortstop and third for an RBI and the Warriors first run.

North Union added on in each of the next three innings.

One run in the third.

The run came after a Bre Anderson single up the middle, a wild pitch and an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

Two runs in a big fourth inning rally.

The Warriors sent eight batters to the plate. Steinberger hit a single, Katelyn Thackery took a walk and Kate Anderson did as well to load the bases with no one out.

Two more walks helped North Union in the inning but two fielders choices, both on plays where defenders made quick decisions to throw to home to get runners advancing from third, kept the Warriors from adding on.

The final run came in the fifth.

Kate Anderson helped herself again. After Steinberger singled, she was able to take second on a wild pitch.

Kate Anderson then drove a double that hit the wall in left field and brought Steinberger in from second base for the final run.

The Gaels tried to put together a comeback in the sixth. Macey Mason drove a double to the base of the wall in right-center field while back-to-back walks loaded the bases. But Anderson worked her way out of it, getting a pop up to second baseman Bierstedt and a deep fly ball out to left fielder Laubenthal for the final out.

With the win, the Warriors have won 14 of their last 15 games with only one more to play before the start of the regional tournament next week.

North Union (22-4) plays its final regular season game tonight against Forest City. The game is schedule to begin in Swea City at 6 p.m.
