Area roundup: Three Cardinal golfers advance to Day 2 of sections
PREP GOLF
BUFFALO LAKE – While the Fairmont boys golf team was unable to reach the Day 2 qualifications of this year’s Section 3AA Tournament, three golfers will be competing individually. On Thursday afternoon, Klay Beemer finished with an 84. Jalin Jackson notched an 85, while Chase Haugen trailed by one stroke with his 86. Aaron Becker and Macklain Anderson weren’t far behind with their scores of 87 and 88. Hudson McKean rounded off the Fairmont six with his 89. Fairmont finished eighth as a team with its score of 342. They trailed Luverne (341) and Litchfield (340) by a handful of strokes. The Marshall boys took home the meet with their impressive 298, followed by New London-Spicer (308) and New Ulm (309), respectively.
FAIRMONT – The Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther and Martin County West boys and girls golf teams competed in a triangular at Rose Lake Golf Course. Blue Earth Area and Maple River were the other two teams competing, respectively.
The Jaguar boys won their side of the triangular with their score of 187. Blue Earth Area got second with a 197, while Martin County West (221) and Maple River (223) placed third and fourth. Jevin Garry got second individually with his 44, followed by Gavin Kester in third with a 45. Logan Zimmer shot a 47. Elijah Jensen notched a 51, and Silas Maassen (56) and Keagan Berhow (59) finished off the rotation. For the Mavericks, it was Knox Larson and Tanner Anderson tying for sixth with their 49. Torrey Paplow got a 58, and Riley Ebeling finished with a 65.
Blue Earth Area won the girls’ side of things with their 183. GHEC/T/ML got second with a 203, and Martin County West finished with a 228. Meredith Miller was the lowest scorer for the Jaguar girls after finishing with a 47, good for fourth. Charlotte Berhow got a 50 that earned fifth, while Phoebe Madsen placed seventh with a 52. Aaliyah Bolstad placed ninth for the Mavericks after her score of 53. Clare Paulson recorded a 54, and Morgan McCorkell had a 58, respectively.
PREP SOFTBALL
MCW 7, JWP 0
WELCOME – Martin County West’s steady offensive output mixed with stellar pitching from Maddie Carlson and Sydney Clow aided the No. 1 Mavericks in their 7-0 victory over Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Thursday afternoon at the Fox Lake Area Sports Complex. MCW will play No. 4 Cleveland this Saturday at Caswell Park in Mankato, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Carlson threw six innings and fanned 12 batters in the process, allowing just one hit. Clow came in for the final frame and recorded a strikeout. Addy Wohlhuter went 3-3 with a double and one RBI. Lillie Schultz also knocked three hits and collected two RBIs. Calrosn and Ida Rohman each had a double and one RBI. Stella Rohman had a hit, while Emily Schettler had three walks to go along with her lone base knock.
PREP TRACK AND FIELD
ST. JAMES – Both Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther and Martin County West/Butterfield Odin boys and girls track and field teams had individuals qualify for the later section championship meet with their performances at the Section 2A, South Sub-Section competition on Thursday afternoon. Here are all the qualifiers.
Track events
GHEC/T/ML’s Rylan Rodgers placed third in the 100-meter sprint, with teammate Londyn Bowers making it in both her 100 and 200-meter sprints after placing fourth and second. Jaguar runner Jacob Mattson placed sixth in the 400-meter sprint. Teammate Cecilia Nowicki qualified for the girls’ after getting eighth. MCW’s Evelynn Christenson got fifth in her 3200-meter run, and GHEC/T/ML Henry Schweiger got fourth for the boys. Vaughn Thompson got seventh and sixth in his 110 and 300-meter hurdle runs for the Jaguars. Rodgers, Thompson, Mattson and Jaxson Bellecourt got fourth in the 4 by 100 relay race for the GHEC/T/ML boys.
Field events
Hank Olson and Mylee Larson represented the shot put for the Mavericks after getting fifth and sixth. GHEC/T/ML’s Lynsie Salic got seventh to also qualify. Larson and Salic had another qualification in discus after placing fifth and eighth, respectively. Jaylee Hanson represented the Mavericks with her fifth-place high jump. Mattson qualified again in the long jump and triple jump after placing seventh and third. MCW’s Lixon Forsberg was behind Mattson in the long jump in eighth. Forsberg’s teammate Hannah Cole also got seventh in the long jump.
