FAIRMONT — Martin County Area head gymnastics coach Anne Post could not have written a more perfect script for the Magic’s final home dual meet of the season.

Freshman Hannah Cole, eighth-grader Lillie Schultz and freshman Jadyn Montgomery claimed second, third and fifth in the all-around competition to power the Magic to a 135.95-131.925 Big South Conference dual-meet triumph over the Waseca Bluejays on Tuesday night in Fairmont.

Cole finished less than six-tenths of a point off of Waseca sophomore Layla Keith’s winning all-around total — 35.7-35.175, while Schultz and Montgomery generated respective season-highs of 34.225 and 32.05 to help MCA better its season’s-best team score by a full point at Live Fit Sport & Wellness Center.

“It proved to be a perfect ending to our regular-season home finale tonight,” said Post, whose lineup improved to 7-1 overall. “The girls keep continue to execute the more difficult skills as we get closer to the conference and sectional meets.

“I thought everybody brought a lot of energy and positivity into the gym tonight and that always helps build confidence.”

Cole, Schultz and sophomore Nola Thedens displayed that confidence by capturing three of the top four spots off the vault table.

Cole planted a piked Tsuk for a winning mark of 9.45, while Schultz rotated her tucked Tsuk for a third-place total of 9.1 to just miss matching Keith’s second-place score of 9.125.

Thedens delivered an 8.85 on the judges’ scorecards via a handspring full vault to nail down fourth place, while senior Abi Chavez and Montgomery officially netted fifth (8.675) and sixth (8.65), respectively, on the event.

Cole also collected top accolades on the uneven parallel bars, edging out Keith by an 8.8-8.675 margin.

Cole displayed her power and agility by spinning inward transitional moves on both high and low bars, while turning a pair of giants on the high bar.

Waseca’s Hannah Parks then squeezed by fellow freshman Jadyn Montgomery of MCA for third place on the unevens, 7.95-7.9, respectively.

While Keith captured first place on the floor exercise with a 9.375, the Magic swept the next three spots in the event with high-level tumbling by Schultz, Cole and Chavez. Schultz posted a runner-up mark of 9.2, Cole was third at 9.075, while Chavez delivered an 8.8.

Thedens and Montgomery contributed solid scoring performances of 8.525 and 7.8, respectively, to round out MCA’s floor effort.

Keith edged out the vastly-improved Thedens for first place on the balance beam, 8.525-8.45, respectively. Schultz tallied an 8.325 to net third, while Waseca’s Lindy Caldwell finished fourth (7.95).

Martin County Area (7-1) travels to St. James Area on Thursday night.
