WELCOME – Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey used six runs in the first inning to propel its 13-2 victory over Martin County West (3-14) on Friday afternoon at the Fox Lake Area Sports Complex. Liam Pytletski and Easton Kuehl each had one hit and both of MCW’s RBIs, while Talon Ebeling had two hits. The Maverick batting order struck out five times and walked twice. Maddex Faber threw the first inning and a third, allowing six earned runs off two hits and five walks. Kade Fennern tossed three innings of relief and gave up four earned runs on four hits, striking out one. Noah Meixell and Huxley Clow combined for the final inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs and four walks. The Mavericks’ pitching staff gave up 13 total walks.

MCW will take on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (G-F-W) next Monday, starting at 4:30 p.m.

USC 15, GHEC/T/ML 5

TRUMAN – Eight runs in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in United South Central’s victory over Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther, 15-5, on Friday afternoon in Truman. The Jaguars got off to an early 4-2 advantage after a double from Bowan Sill and a single from Elliott Flohrs in the third frame. But the Rebels used four hits in the top of the fourth to put up the big crooked number. Griffin Studer was the starting pitcher for GHEC/T/ML, throwing three innings while giving up five runs, three of which were earned. Reagan Emmert tossed the next two frames and allowed four hits with six total runs, two of which were earned. Sill came in for the final inning and gave up three runs on two hits and two walks, striking out three. Studer had two hits, while Landon Schneider, Sill, Emmert, Flohrs and Carter Werner all had one, respectively.

 

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

SLEEPY EYE – The Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin and Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther track and field teams competed in Thursday afternoon’s Tomahawk Conference Championships held at Sleepy Eye High School. Here are the results from each team.

The Maverick boys placed seventh overall with their 22 team points. Hank Olson was the team’s top finisher after his personal best hurl of 42′ 7.5″ took home second in the shot put. He also got seventh in the discus with a season best toss of 111′ 2″. Lixon Forsberg got sixth and ninth in the triple and long jumps. Elliot Reynolds, Braxton Faber, Cedric Johnson and Marek Mulder finished fourth in the 4 by 800-meter relay, while Pierce Rohman, Forsberg, Gavin Schoen and Ron Demand placed the same in the shorter 4 by 100. Rohman got seventh in the solo 100-meter sprint, and Forsberg sixth in the 200.

For the girls, it was a fourth-place finish with 50 points, barely outdueling Wabasso by one. Bree Paris cracked the top 10 with her seventh-place time in the 400-meter sprint. Evelynn Christenson won the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:36.10, a personal best for the sophomore. A bulk of the Maverick girls’ points came from their throws. Mylee Larson got third in shot put, while teammate Sophia Peterson got seventh. The duo had even further success in discus. Larson took home gold with a toss of 101′ 5″. Peterson barely missed second place, but had a mark of 94′ 10″ that was good for second. Jaylee Hanson got fifth place in both high and triple jumps. Her performance on the triple jump of 29′ 5″ was a personal best.

Bowan Sill and Rylan Rodgers placed fourth and fifth in the 100 for the Jaguar boys, who finished with a team score of 44, good enough to place fifth. Jacob Mattson did well in his 400, finishing in sixth with a time of 55.91, a new personal best. Another personal best was found in the 3200 by Henry Schweiger, who finished in sixth. Vaughn Thompson did well in his 110- and 300-meter hurdles. A personal best time of 17.91 for second in the 110, while his 47.40 was good for third in the 300. Rodgers, Thompson, Mattson and Jaxson Bellecourt ran second in the 4 by 100, trailing just G-F-W. Mattson capped off his solid meet with a second-place finish in the triple jump.

The GHEC/T/ML girls’ track and field team took home a sixth-place finish with their 29 team points. Londyn Bowers was a point driver in the short distance, placing first in the 100 and second in the 200. Cecilia Nowicki got fifth in the 400. Lynsie Salic earned fourth-place finishes in her throws of shot put and discus.
