BANCROFT, Iowa — “First pitch to last pitch, this was our most complete game of the year,” North Union head baseball coach Royce Byrnes said following his Warriors’ 8-4 Top of Iowa Conference triumph over the Eagle Grove Eagles on Wednesday night in Bancroft.

The Warriors, who improved to 3-5 overall on the summer season, finished with 10 hits, including three for extra bases, while North Union starting pitcher Jay Heinen and left-handed reliever Levi Vaske limited the Eagles to only seven hits on the night.

Heinen recorded the winning decision, giving up four runs on six hits, while striking out three and issuing three walks in four innings of work.

Vaske collected the save by allowing only one hit in three shutout innings of relief. Vaske recorded five strikeouts and issued only two walks.

“Levi was effective (pitching) tonight,” Byrnes said. “He came in and threw strikes to help us get the win over an Eagle Grove team that beat a couple of nice teams so far this season. This was a nice win for us.”

Mack Morgan took the loss for the Eagles, going four innings, while giving up six runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked three.

Syrus Willard pitched two innings of relief for Eagle Grove, giving up two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out two.

Colin Rasch was North Union’s top hitter by collecting three hits, while teammates Talan Priester and Ryan Houkoos each had two hits apiece.

Heinen, Landon Hagedorn and Logan Odegaard also added one hit apiece for the Warriors.

Five different Warriors drove in at least one run and the top three hitters in the lineup — Carter Morphew, Priester and Heinen — combined to score seven of their eight runs.

Blake Moran, Cayden Schultz, Jake Jeske, Jordan Morris, Andrew Dencklau, Levi Langfitt and Willard generated one hit apiece for Eagle Grove.
