Council OKs phase two of harvesting
The Fairmont City Council approved going ahead with the second phase of a contract with Premier Lake Harvesting for Curly Leaf Pondweed removal and disposal this week. In their report to the board, it was shared that during phase one more than 129,000 pounds of the aquatic invasive species has been removed. We’ve all seen it and we’ve heard the complaints and while it won’t entirely eradicate the problem, it’s good that the council is taking steps toward combatting this problem.

Songs of the summer
The Fairmont City Band played its first concert of the year this past week at the newly renovated Sylvania Park Bandshell, which is also celebrating 100 years. The city band embodies community, coming together to share talents for the enjoyment of others. What makes the Fairmont City Band extra special is that the concerts are put on at this beautiful, historic park. Those who have never been to a city band performance should really consider checking out one of the upcoming concerts this summer.

Martin County Library launches summer programs
The Martin County Library system has started up a themed summer reading program and has a bunch of different activities planned around it. This is a great way to engage kids in reading by tying some other elements and activities into it. You too often hear that there’s nothing in the community for kids to do but organizations like the library are always coming up with creative ideas to hit different interests. The library and its many offerings would be another good thing for people in the community to familiarize themselves with.

New street signs coming to Fairmont
The Fairmont City Council approved of getting new retroreflective street signs this week in order to come into compliance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Some good questions were asked asked by council members and while there was an option to get logos and/or new street poles to go with the signs, the council opted to just get new signs ordered and the motion passed unanimously. It was great to see the council listen to city staff, ask questions, consider all options and agree to go in the same direction.
