BEA 5th, MCA 6th at Section 2A gymnastics meet
ST. JAMES — Jenna Sikel captured the all-around championship with a total of 37.2 points to power Mankato West to a school-record 146.95 points to earn the Section 2A gymnastics team crown on Thursday night.
Mankato West advances to compete in the Class 1A state team meet at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.
Sikel, along with sectional runner-up all-arounder Kayla Goblirsch (36.475) of New Ulm and bronze medalist Lauren McDonough (36.45) of Faribault, will headline the Section 2 field in the state individual meet at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Wilkins Auditorium. The top six finishers on each event, including the top three all-arounders, also qualified for next Saturday’s state competition.
Addison Armstrong produced 33.425 points to capture 11th place in the all-around to guide Blue Earth Area to a fifth-place team finish with 128.3 points. Haley Kalis netted 12th in the all-around with a 32.3 for the Bucs.
Ellie Hernes generated 30.825 points to garner 13th place in the all-around competition to top Martin County Area’s sixth-place team showing of 125.3.
Ellie Schultze and Anna Bachenberg topped MCA’s individual efforts by placing 11th on the balance beam (8.9) and floor exercise (9.025), respectively.
Kalis tied for 10th place on the vault with an 8.75 for BEA, while Armstrong netted 12th with an 8.75, too. Hernes led MCA on the vault with an 8.475.
Armstrong led the area contingent on the unevens in 17th place with a 7.8, while Jadyn Montgomery paced MCA on the event at 7.55.
Armstrong followed MCA’s Schultze on the beam with an 8.025 for BEA, while Anna Utermarck placed 17th for MCA at 7.95.
Armstrong collected 15th on the floor with an 8.85 for BEA to trail just MCA’s Bachenberg on the event among area gymnasts.
Sikel paced her winning all-around score by striking gold on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.1, vaulted her way to a silver medal at 9.375, claimed bronze on the floor at 9.425, while finishing fourth on the balance beam (9.3).
Goblirsch, who paced New Ulm’s third-place team score of 136.775 behind St. Peter’s runner-up total of 139.5, pocketed second place on the unevens (8.975), garnered fourth on the vault (9.15), pocketed sixth on the beam (9.125) and tied for seventh on the floor exercise at 9.225.
Mankato West’s McKenna Schreiber struck gold on the vault (9.45), teammate Niya Hauer placed first on the beam (9.325), while West’s Zoey Hermel made it a Scarlet individual sweep by netting top honors on the floor with a 9.675.
