Hernes, Artz power Fairmont tracksters to sweep of Marshall quad

MARSHALL — Hudson Artz and Ellie Hernes won every event they competed in to help lead the Fairmont Cardinal boys and girls track & field teams to respective wins during quad action Tuesday in Marshall.
Artz dominated the sprints to help the Fairmont boys garner 112 points, while Hernes controlled the jumping pits to help the Cardinal girls earn 138 points.
Artz took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.32 seconds, while Fairmont’s James Johnson took second at 11.79 and Prince Lebbi finished fourth at 12.57.
Artz’s time of 23.37 took gold in the 200-meter dash, while James Johnson finished in 25.21 for second, Andrew Johnson took third in 26 seconds flat and Lebbi finished fourth in 26.31.
The first-place 400-meter time of 54.81 also belonged to Artz, teammate Blaze Geiger (1:00.35) took fourth and Gage Cyphers (1:01.29) finished fifth.
Will Niestrath garnered a fourth-place spot for the Cardinals in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:27.81, while Taylor Austin took fifth in 5:37.92. Alex Cruz placed third in the 3,200-meter run for the Cardinals with a time of 12:00.6, while Kainen Craig earned silver in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 20.1.
David Maakestad took first for the Cardinals in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.49, while Fairmont’s 4×100-meter relay team of Elijah Johnson, Armando Hernandez, James Johnson and Lebbi took second with a time of 48.95.
The Cardinals’ 4×200-meter relay crew of Hernandez, Trey Tumbleson, Isaiah Lockwood and Maakestad also claimed silver with a time of 1:42.2, while the 4×400-meter relay squad of Andrew Johnson, Geiger, Maakestad and Craig claimed gold in 3:48.37.
Andrew Johnson, Cyphers, Ty Nawrocki and Connor Artner teamed for a first-place finish in the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 9:38.72.
Noah Rahm took second in both the shot put (40-8.5) and the discus (122-01), while Sawyer Tordsen took third in both with a heave of 40-6 in the shot put and a toss of 110-8 in the discus.
Hank Artz took fourth place in the shot for Fairmont with a throw of 36-4 and fifth in the discus with a toss of 82-3.5.
Hernandez claimed third in the high jump for the Cardinals when he cleared the bar at 5-7, while Craig took second in the pole vault when he jumped 7-6.
Hernandez added a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-1.75, while Lebbi jumped 17-6.25 for fourth.
Lockwood took third place in the triple jump (35-8) for the Cardinals, while Tumbleson (33-7.25) finished fourth.
For the girls, Hernes took first in the triple jump with a leap of 36-2.75, while Emily Frank finished fourth at 30-11.25 and Jazlyn Geerdes took fifth at 30-11. Hernes added a second gold in the long jump with a leap of 15-8, while Brooklyn Meyer jumped 15-2.5 for second and Hadley Artz landed 13-11.25 into the pit for third.
The Cardinals swept the top four in the pole vault with Rachel O’Connor leading the way at 7-6, the same height that garnered second for Sabrina Segar. Ellie Schultze took third at 7-0 and Vanessa Bliesmer cleared 6-0 for fourth.
Hope Klanderud led the Cardinals’ high jumpers when she cleared 4-6 for third place, while Hannah Linse placed fifth at 4-4.
Natalie Tonne earned silver for the Cardinals in the shot put with a throw of 32-8, while Abigail Cihoski took third at 26-5.5 and Alexa Bush finished fourth at 25-7.5.
Tonne added a third-place finish in the discus when her toss landed 76-10 away from the circle, while Bliesmer heaved the disc 60-5 for fourth and Bush tossed it 59-10 for fifth.
The Cardinals’ 4×100 relay team of Alexis Rojo, Meyer, Bella Larson and Segar claimed gold with a time of 58.45, while the 4×200-meter crew of Schultze, Frank, Emily Hagen and Laura Thompson took third in 2:04.14.
The Cardinals’ 4×400-meter relay team of Larson, Schultze, Carissa Saxton and Ellie Ortega finished third in 4:39.81, while the 4×800-meter relay squad of Macy Hanson, Carys Gudahl, Tabitha Thatcher and Saxton finished second in 11:00.36.
Hernes garnered golds for the Cardinals in both hurdle events. She needed only 17.1 to cross the finish line in the 100-meter hurdles, just ahead of teammate Hadley Artz, who finished second in 18.08, while Meyer took fourth in 18.83.
Hernes’ time of 51.56 was good for first in the 300-meter hurdles, while Artz was fourth in 55.95.
Thompson took gold for the Cardinals in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:40.3, while Thatcher placed third in 13:37.63.
Hanson earned first place for Fairmont in the 1,600-meter run when she crossed the finish line in 5:40.55, while Hannah Neusch took fourth in 6:02.18.
Hanson added a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.17, while Neusch took fourth in 2:46.65.
Thompson (1:06.49) and Saxton (1:09.44) took second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash, while Klanderud finished fifth in 1:13.53.
Schultze claimed gold for the Cardinals in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.47, while Larson finished third in 30.84 and Ortega took fifth in 31.05.
Segar took second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.68, while Meyer claimed fourth in 14.34.
The Cardinals wait to get into the starting blocks until next Tuesday when they go to Waseca for quint action against Waseca, Blue Earth Area, Jackson County Central and New Ulm.
