Area roundup: Fairmont golf succeeds in BCS Division Event
PREP GOLF
The Fairmont boys and girls golf teams placed first and second at Thursday afternoon’s BCS Division Event #2. The boys played in Blue Earth, while the girls traveled to Pipestone.
Fairmont boys’ team score of 164 just edged Redwood Valley to take home the first-place finish. This was aided by excellent scores from Hudson McKean and Macklain Anderson, who shot a 38 and 39 to finish third and fifth individually. Klay Beemer barely missed the top 10, placing 11th after shooting a 42. Jalin Jackson was the final Fairmont player to crack the top 20, with his score of 45 good enough for 17th place. After Redwood Valley, it was Luverne getting third place with their score of 170. Windom Area got a 174, while Blue Earth Area shot a 176. Pipestone Area and Jackson County Central rounded out the seven teams with scores of 181 and 188, respectively.
The Fairmont girls were four strokes away from taking the first-place title from Blue Earth Area, but instead settled for second with their 192. Redwood Valley and Luverne broke 200 with their scores of 195 and 199. Windom Area shot a 208, and Jackson County Central finished with a 218. Leslie Zarling, similar to the Fairmont team, placed second with her 43. Katherine Zelaya wasn’t too far behind after collecting a 48 that was good for ninth. Joslyn Meyer finished with a 50, while Carly Gustafson and Ingrid Edman shot a 51.
Both teams will play in a home meet tomorrow, starting at 1:00 p.m. The boys will be at Interlaken Golf Club, while the girls travel to Rose Lake Golf Course.
ALDEN – The Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther boys and girls golf teams competed against Alden-Conger on Thursday afternoon at Oakview Golf Course. Both teams narrowly lost. The boys were two strokes away from the Knights after finishing with a 185, while the girls shot a 242 compared to Alden-Conger’s 236, respectively.
Gavin Kester led the boys with his impressive score of 39, while Jevin Garry was right behind his teammate with a 42. These two scores were good for first and second, respectively. Logan Zimmer got a 50 to earn his seventh-place finish.
Charlotte Berhow added another first-place individual finish after shooting a 52. Meredith Miller’s 60 was good for fourth, and Phoebe Madsen shot a 61 for sixth.
GHEC/T/ML plays next Monday. The boys will compete at Oakdale Golf Club, and the girls at Mew Ulm Golf Club. Both meets are set for 10:00 a.m.
PREP BASEBALL
FAIRMONT 14, WINDOM 8
WINDOM – The Fairmont baseball team overcame a five-run deficit in the second inning to power past Windom 14-8 at Island Park on Thursday afternoon.
Preston Geerdes relieved Mason Bicknase in the middle of the second inning and picked up the win after his one and one-third innings of work. Joey Crissinger tossed the remaining four frames for the Cardinals, allowing one run and striking out five batters.
Fairmont scored nine of its runs in the third and fourth innings. Seven Cardinal batters combined for 10 total hits. Nolyn Goerndt had three hits and four RBIs. Joseph Hackett had three hits and three RBIs.
Fairmont will play Windom one more time on Friday afternoon at Herb Wolf Field. First pitch begins at 5:30 p.m.
PREP SOFTBALL
LUVERNE – The Fairmont softball team took two victories over Luverne on Thursday afternoon, thanks to the help of Brylee Miller in the circle. Miller threw all seven innings in game one, holding Luverne to one run and helping Fairmont win 3-1. Lexi Sundeen got the nod to start in game two and tossed five and two-thirds innings. After allowing four earned runs, Fairmont head coach Cory Hainy went back to Miller to close out the victory, winning 7-4.
Miller and Sundeen combined for five of the team’s six hits during game one. Fairmont scored one run in the first and two in the third to grind out the victory. Gwynth Schultz, Sundeen and Miller each had two RBIs in game two, with Bria Williamson getting one, to beat Luverne. Fairmont scored the three-game leading runs in the sixth inning.
