Cardinals dominate Class AA at Sentinel Relays

Photo by Jake Olson: Fairmont's 4 by 800 girls team celebrates their first place finish during Friday afternoon's Fairmont Sentinel Relays.

FAIRMONT – The 70th year of the Fairmont Sentinel Relays was dominated yet again by Fairmont High School in Class AA.

The boys wrapped up their night with a team score of 177.5, outperforming Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet by nearly 60 points to get the gold. It was a similar sight for the girls, who recorded an even more outstanding mark of 194 in the wake of a crushing win past St. James/Madelia.

“I was really excited with how well the kids competed tonight,” Fairmont track and field head coach Jesse Walters said. “We had a lot of big jumps in performances across the board. You could feel a lot of excitement and support from the team. It was fun to watch them compete hard.”

Track events

The day started with a pair of first-place finishes in the 4 by 800 relay for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. Makenzie Gerhardt, Ella Wubbena, Lauren Zarling and Audrey Nemmers outlasted St. James-Madelia by nearly seven seconds. The time difference was more drastic for the boys, as Jordan Thompson, Cooper Gudahl, Carmyne Hecht, and Brier Lenort blew the doors off everyone in the competition, securing the top spot by nearly a minute with a time of 8:37.10.

“The boys’ 4 by 800 team is really good this year, so it wasn’t a surprise when they won it all,” Fairmont assistant coach Andrew Moeller said. “But for the girls, that was by far the best they’ve run this year. There have only been a couple of times [for the girls] where we’ve had any girls under 2:40, and the average was under that today, which was great to see.”

Mollie Leiding fell to just Allison Luebben and Natalia Botello-Ramos in her 100-meter sprint. Tavian Harvey was 0.02 seconds off from a podium finish for the boys, barely falling behind Alexander Williamson from Minneapolis North Community.

Fairmont’s 4 by 200 teams continued to top the charts for the relays. Nathaliah Johnson, Harlee Fastnacht, Addison Toothaker and Emelia Klanderud edged Jackson County Central’s team by less than a second for a pure photo finish.

The boys’ season-best finish of 1:33.07 showed with flying colors on their end. Tavian Harvey took the last leg of the relay with ease before crossing the finish line ahead of Minneapolis North Community and River Valley.

One of the highlights from the Class AA mile race came from Cole Hanson and Hecht. Both runners set personal bests – 4:44.53 and 4:57.39 – for their first and third-place finishes. Caleb DeCann from St. James-Madelia got second after his time of 4:47.99.

Delaney Klug and Qwynn Healey also recorded personal bests of 6:12.34 and 6:17.06 to earn fourth and fifth. Andrew Moeller was happy seeing this many career performances from his distance team.

“Cole Hanson, as an eighth grader, ran a 4:44, which is an incredible time. That was a big time for him,” Andrew Moeller said. “He’s had a couple of really good races here. And Carmyne was under five [minutes] for the first time, and that’s a big milestone.”

“Both of our girls in the mile ran pretty big personal records themselves. I’m really liking where we are now, and things are trending in the right direction.”

Toothaker and Fastnacht placed second and third, behind Marley Hewitt from River Valley, in the 400-meter sprint. Toothaker finished with a 1:02.27 while Fastnacht was close behind with her 1:03.22. Both for personal bests.

Lenort and Jordan Thompson used their long-distance sprinting skills to finish first and third. Lenort’s 53.22 was a season best, and Jordan Thompson’s 54.92 was the fastest he’s ever completed the race.

Dakota Wiley and LCWM/Nicollet’s Aiden Moeller were neck and neck in the 300-meter hurdles and had a close finish in the end. Aiden Moeller topped Wiley by a literal split second after his 41.02 time won by 0.01 seconds. Wiley’s 41.03 was a personal best.

Emerson Jackson, Takhyla Harvey, Zarling and Abbie Simpson hit their stride in the 1600-meter medley relay. A season-best finish of 4:34.22 outkicked Blue Earth Area to win the event by three seconds.

It was a similar story for the boys. Seth Seibring, Kayden Gerhardt, Evan Reyelts and Carter Hanson notched a 3:50.52, a season-best time, to take down LCWM/Nicollet for first.

Leiding and Tavian Harvey were again at the top for Fairmont’s 200-meter sprint group. Both runners placed second, with Leiding’s time of 27.07 good enough for a season-best finish.

The second-to-last event of the night, the 4 by 100 sprint relay, was taken home by the Fairmont girls. Johnson, Montgomery, Toothaker and Leiding had a season-best time of 51.71 to beat Hutchinson.

Both Fairmont 4 by 400 sprint relay teams capped off the Sentinel Relays with a title finish. Perkins, Madi Thompson, Klanderud and Fastnacht edged River Valley with a time of 4:18.03.

Jordan Thompson, Lenort, Carter Hanson and Wiley left their mark on the track to blaze home a victory. Finishing with a season-best time of 3:30.25, the group defeated the next closest team, LCWM/Nicollet, by nearly nine seconds.

Field events

Kaylee Kloeckner and Addison Folkerts continued to be at the top of the shot put and discus finishers with their throws on Friday. Kloeckner won the shot put with a 35-06.50. Folkerts found third with her distance of 32-00.50, respectively.

The two switched spots when it came to the discus. Folkerts, as she has all season, won the event after her toss of 101-09 bested Matilda Carleton from LCWM/Nicollet. Kloeckner just missed the 100-foot threshold, but did enough to get third after her throw of 96-05 landed firmly in the ground.

Tyler Bicknase and Caine Gronewold each got second in shot put and discus. Bicknase hit a mark of 43-11.50, and Gronewold got a personal best heave of 124-03. Drew Turgeon took home the gold with his mesmerizing throw of 177-10.

The high jump was well represented on both the boys’ and girls’ teams. For the girls, Klanderud and Leiding tied for second after reaching 4-11 on the marker. Ava Spitzner from St. James/Madelia took home the title. Tytan Thompson left little doubt for the rest of his competition after clearing the 6-00 mark to beat Braxton Dudgeon from LCWM/Nicollet.

Another personal best was added to pole vaulter Perkins’ resume with her first-place mark. Her height of 11-07 surpassed her season best from a year ago and is the new program-best finish for the Cardinals. But her accolades didn’t stop there. The sophomore also won the triple jump crown. Her 33-09 defeated Jackson County Central’s Zadi Farmer.

Montgomery got second in the pole vault with her 9-00. LCWM/Nicollet’s won the same event for the boys, clearing 13-00. Jase Meade from Fairmont recorded an 11-06 to earn second, respectively.

Dudgeon used the same athleticism, this time in the triple jump, to take home the title over Travohn Harvey from Fairmont. Dudgeon got a 41-03, while Travohn Harvey sat at 40-00.

“I’m going to be up late tonight putting in the person bests on the sheet,” Walters said jokingly. “It’s just part of how you train. You train to go fast at big meets, and this is a big meet for us. We have a lot of really big meets ahead of us in the next few weeks, so it’s nice to see what we call peaking at the right time.”

Fairmont will be back next Monday at St. Peter Middle School in the Varsity Section True Team competition. Action across the track will start at 4:00 p.m.
