B.E. Area boys golfers qualify for state meet

Fairmont's Senf, BEA's Lane and Jags' Stevens net individual berths

NEW PRAGUE — Last year, the Blue Earth Area Bucs boys golf team snuck into the second day of the Section 2AA Meet on a tiebreaker, but couldn’t get to the state meet.

This year, the team held a strong Day 1 lead and built upon it for a section-winning two-day score of 688 on Monday at New Prague Golf Course. The Bucs boys team, along with BEA’s Mateja Lane and Fairmont’s Bergen Senf, will appear in the Class AA Meet on June 13-14 at Ridges @ Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan.

“It was a little nerve-wrecking on the back side, having a 10-shot lead at the turn. Our guys shot a little higher than they normally do,” Bucs boys golf head coach Travis Armstrong said. “They forgot about themselves and finished it off for their teammates, and I was really proud of them for that.”

Braden Gudahl lowered his Day 1 score by five strokes to lead the Bucs with a round of 77 on Monday for an overall third-place finish. Hunter Spencer also improved upon his first day total, penciling a 79 for sixth overall.

Manning Lane and Gaven Bruellman both shot 86s for a Bucs Day 2 total of 328, beating St. Peter by one (329) for the state bid.

Tate Thielfoldt and Nate Murphy shot a 104 and a 107, respectively for BEA.

“I was hoping we could get to state, but even if we hadn’t it would’ve been OK. Now, we can say we made it to state,” Armstrong said.

On the girls’ side, Senf earned her first state golf meet appearance via a third-best score of 90.

“Bergen coming into the day, knew she had a good chance to qualify. She was sitting in a good spot,” Cardinals head coach Brad Haugen said. “She really survived a couple of tough holes … had a triple bogey on each side that could’ve derailed her and got her to thinking the wrong way and shoot a bad score.

“But she just kept fighting through and made a couple pars on a couple of extra holes that she needed to shoot a nice round of 90.”

BEA’s Mateja Lane took eight strokes off her first day score of 96 to shoot an 88 for the fifth and final state-bound spot.

As a team, Jordan won the girls’ section championship, beating St. Peter, 369-384. Aysia Kim led the team with an 89. Rachel Henderson shot a 90, while both Molly Kelvington and Autumn Sivilay carded 95s.
