Fairmont girls take 3rd at Big South Championships

MORTON — The Fairmont girls golf team took third out of 12 teams Monday at the Big South Conference Girls Golf Tournament, carding a 383.

Blue Earth Area took first with a 355, while Redwood Valley took second (359).

Redwood Valley’s Mile Jenniges was the medalist with a 71. BEA’s Payten Gudahl took third with an 85, while BEA’s Katelyn Storbeck shot an 86 to tie for fourth. Fairmont was led by Brynn Gustafson, who shot an 87 to take sixth, while teammates Katherine Zelaya and Leslie Zarling each shot a 96 to tie for 15th. BEA’s Rylan Storbeck shot a 93 to tie for 11th.

BOYS GOLF

Fairmont boys take 11th at BSC tourney

MORTON — The Fairmont boys golf team took 11th at the Big South Conference Boys Golf Tournament on Monday with a score of 363.

St. Peter won the conference tourney with a 305, while Blue Earth Area took seventh with a 341.

Luverne’s Henry Hartquist was the medalist with a 68. BEA’s Jackson Blondin shot an 83 to tie for 19th, while teammates Eli Blagg and Cole Becker shot an 85 each to tie for 30th.

Fairmont was led by Harmon Schrunk and Hudson Mckean, who shot an 88 each to tie for 37th. Mathew Cone shot a 90 to tie for 45th also for Fairmont.

PREP TENNIS

Fairmont 4, Redwood Valley 3

FAIRMONT — With the match on the line Monday, Fairmont’s No. 2 doubles team of Oliver Thedens and Simone Castro sealed the deal with a win to help the Cardinals defeat Redwood Valley 4-3 in a Big South Conference spring tennis match.

Thedens and Castro defeated Johnson Mariner and Mason Davis 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 to get the 4-3 win for Fairmont. At No. 1 singles, Zack Lundeen got a 6-2, 6-1 win over Fairmont’s Dominick Lund-May, while Fairmont’s Anthony Stegge defeated Yzykiel Rendon 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Fairmont’s Tyler Slama beat Alex Bourret 6-3, 6-2, while Fairmont’s Sebastian Castro defeated Collin Johnson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Karyon Hicks and Cole Johnson defeated Fairmont’s Carter Quist and Wylee Fredericksen 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Reese Regnier and Zach Malecek defeated Fairmont’s Lilly Ortega and Zach Ashland 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.

PREP BASEBALL

Lake Crystal 12, MCW 6

WELCOME — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial topped Martin County West 12-6 on Monday in a Valley Conference baseball game.

Jeremiah Olson took the loss for MCW in five innings of work, giving up four earned runs. Noah Meixell pitched the last two innings for the Mavericks and allowed one earned run.

Lucas Larson led MCW at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Olson had a 2-for-4 day at the plate to go with an RBI. Cam Meyer was 1 for 3 with two runs scored also for the Mavericks, while Noah Meixell was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

MCW (1-10, 0-6) is at Windom Area on Tuesday.
