Bucs split triangular; Jayhawks drop two duals

BLUE EARTH – The Blue Earth Area Bucs traded wins during nonconference triangular wrestling action on Tuesday in Blue Earth.

The Bucs downed the Le Sueur-Henderson Giants 54-27, before falling to the Class AA, No. 6-ranked New Prague Trojans 46-18.

The Bucs captured nine match victories on their way to beating the Giants in the first dual of the triangular.

Adam Legred won by forfeit at 106 pounds, while teammates Brandon Williams (160), David Franta (170) and Gus Phillips (195) also took wins by forfeit.

BEA’s Alec Huber pinned Dylan Pauly in 3 seconds during the 132-pound match, before Jordan Stelter followed with a pin of Jordan Carlson at 2:52 at 138.

Mike Ankeny won the third straight match by fall for the Bucs, pinning Jesse Kaelberer in 20 seconds at 145 pounds.

Jacob Johnson then pinned Trenten Rogich at 182 before Class A, No. 7-ranked 285-pounder Martin Granados pinned Joe Abrahamson in 1:17 to clinch the win for Blue Earth Area.

The Giants’ Class A, No. 1-ranked 113-pounder Austin Anderly showed his skill by pinning Cole Klinkner at 2:19 in the 120-pound matchup.

Against the sixth-ranked Trojans, Class A No. 8-ranked 170-pounder Franta, Granados and three other Bucs were able to capture wins.

Blue Earth Area’s Camden Bowers won a 10-5 decision over Tanner Rutt at 126 pounds, while Johnson snuck past Mitch Gullickson at 195 pounds with a 12-11 win.

Franta outlasted Joe Heinz 8-5 in the 170-pound match, before Gus Phillips pinned Camerson Schmitz at 1:27 in the 195-pound match.

Granados finished off the meet with a win for the Bucs, shutting out Zack Lafavor 1-0.

Class AA, No. 10-ranked 126-pounder Nick Knutsen and Class AA, No. 2-ranked 138-pounder James Berg picked up two of the Trojans’ match victories.

Knutsen won an 11-4 decision over Huber at 132 pounds, while Berg took an 11-0 major decision win over Ankeny at 145 pounds.

The Class AA, No. 1-ranked 132-pounder Griffin Parriott also took a major decision win, beating Stelter 22-14.

Class AA, No. 6-ranked 160-pounder Richard Reinartz grabbed one of the final Trojan victories, pinning Williams in 2:14 in the 160-pound match.

Blue Earth Area travels to Class AA, No. 1-ranked Jackson County Central on Thursday night for a nonconference dual meet.

East Triangular

The Mankato East Cougars snuck by the Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther Jayhawks 39-37 before the Rochester Century Panthers completed the meet sweep of the Jayhawks with a 46-36 win in nonconference wrestling action on Tuesday in Mankato.

In both duals, the Jayhawks had the lead going into the final two matches, and twice the team victories slipped away.

The Jayhawks built a 28-12 lead over the Cougars on the strength of three pins, one major decision and a win by forfeit.

Cole Pietsch pinned Guillermo Ponce at 113 pounds in one minute and 52 seconds, before James Hodge claimed a 11-0 major decision win over Gage Hildebrandt at 126 pounds.

The Jayhawks’ Jerimiah Colon won the 132-pound match by forfeit, before teammate Justin Gifferson pinned Michael Miller at 3:23 at 138.

Zack Pettersen then increased the Jayhawks’ lead to 28-12 with a pin of Xeng Yang in 1:03 of the 145-pound match.

After the Cougars responded with three straight wins, the Jayhawks were ahead by just one point.

Steve Tierney turned the momentum around for the Jayhawks, pinning Roderick Miller in 40 seconds at 182 pounds, before Jake Denn snuck past Nick Makovsky at 195 pounds for the 13-11 win.

Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, Ben Winans and Logan Swanson won the 220- and 285-pound matches for the Cougars, pinning Jeremey Blakesley and Alex Gomez, respectively, to take the one-point meet victory.

After trailing to the Panthers 34-6, Colon, Jordan Osborne, Jesus Lopez and Weston Ricard helped the Jayhawks to stake a lead in the second dual of the night.

Colon pinned Michael Siewert at 132 pounds in 4:18, before Osborne pinned Tanner Hall at 152 in 1:21 to cut the deficit to 34-12.

Lopez then pinned Miguel Benjamin in 2:45 at 160 pounds and Ricard followed with a pin of Matt Kallis at 170 pounds to make it 34-24.

With the momentum in the Jayhawks’ favor, Tierney won the 182-pound match by forfeit to cut the Panthers’ lead to 34-30.

Denn then gave the Jayhawks their first lead of the dual with two matches to follow, pinning Edgar Saenz in 1:52 at 195 to go up 36-34.

The Jayhawks were unable to take either of the final match victories however, with the Panthers’ Luke Wilson and Gunnar Simonson taking pins to clinch the 46-36 win.
